VHF Marine radios do not require a license. If you decide to install an HF marine radio, it requires a ships license.

Axel,

It would help if you update your profile with your location. You can click on "User Control Panel" above then click on "profile".

As to your question. It depends on where you live. I think in most of the world you need a license of some sort. In the U.S. you normally don't for a normal VHF Marine Radio.

I am sure there are others on this board with more specific info that will chime in and give out more details.

But, I am also shopping for a VHF for my :macm: . I have a handheld but am looking to add a fixed radio as well.

Good Luck,
Jim

c130 King said part of what I was going to say - - - where are you and where will you be sailing and what kind of sailing will you be doing - - ie. coastal real close to shore, open ocean, on lakes???

If staying near shore or in lakes, IMHO, big VHF units and whips, etc., are not necessary - - - handhelds work JUST FINE and are more powerful and cheaper than ever - - - you can get a decent handheld for $89 or less. Of course, if you are cruisng open waters, then the more radio and antennae the better.

Excepy for some trips to Catalina from Long Beach or Marina Del Rey, I always stayed within sight of land and my handheld has always been totally sufficient, and I've never wished I had a bigger radio.

I previous posts, AxelH had indicated that he was in the Arkansas area, so I did not even notice the lack of area in his profile and just ass-u-med :D that he was referring to the US. Good lesson for everyone, Have a location of some sort in your profile, even if it is just a State, or Country. It makes things a lot easier for everybody.
