Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
wow I think you solved one of my little problems, that 75 has a lip sticking out where you attached the ball joint for the steering, the rusty part, whats that? It brought the motor in line with the rudders, didnt it?
I have the same steering and my motor needs to have an inch longer rod to be perfectly aligned with the rudders. But my ball joint is attached farther into the motor than yours. So instead of extending the rod I can do what you have and extend the mount.
hey wheres your rudders and prop?
Monster merc's on mac's , sounds like a movie, thats what we have for sure. Bet your extremely happy with the performance. I have 2.5 hours on mine, so havent sailed yet with it hanging on my boat yet.
What do you do to protect the paint on the cowl, Mine came with a warning sticker that said cowl will scratch if I even wipe the dust off with a dry cloth. Im thinking of getting merc's form fitted cover that fits tight and you can use the motor with the cover installed. Now we either need a black boat or paint the engine white......

That was the steel plate that attached to the front of the eng. where an tiller handle with throttle & gear shift controls can be externally installed just like a regular O,B it was installed their for shipping the third bolt hole went into the mounting brkt & locked the eng, preventing turning during shipping. I bent it on a 45deg angle and installed the stud for my steering I will make one later out of SS Plate then it will not be such an eye sore but it will do for now until I get all the other »Mods I`m doing finished first , but if you need more pic`s I`ll take them when I get back home on Monday OK

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
I talked to my installer today and asked if he gave me all the parts that were left over like I asked, hoping that something like that was over looked. He said that I can order a duel steering linkage plate that goes there too. It looks almost like yours, but extends out for a linkage rod to run two engines at the same time and bolts in those holes. Im going to order one.
I thought it odd that my steering link went so far under the motor, it almost touches the cowling when trimmed up. Its on the to do list now.

Geoff - snap those plastic caps back on those propanes when you store them... I dont think they make them for the marine environment and corrosion in the valve will give you a propane gusher one day - you sure wouldnt want this below.
You could even throw them in a plastic bag to protect them from water.

Morning Steph
I had a feeling someone would give me sh$t for the condition those were in.....
You're right.
However, me being me, first thing I lost were those plastic covers o/b.
Along with my ship/ship radio, 2 boat hooks, countless pieces of boat hardware..... the list goes on
At least they are not stored in the bilges, right? LOL
Can't think of a better place to keep them. Maybe I should get one of those large Ziploc bags and keep them in that.
Take care Stephen

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
I have this bag and hang it from the safety line just ahead of the port winch, it holds three bottles.

I didn't find it on the WasteMarine site, but it is listed at Magma's site.

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
Hi highlander...a question...Why did you find it necessary to fit a qick release knuckle joint on BOTH ends of the rod that connects the motor to the steering assembly? One end is a very good idea and i have just received my SS one from the STATES, but would the motor end one EVER be removed...surely a nut/bolt linkage there is o.k....and cheaper...My knuckle cost me AU$89.00...but am looking forward to fitting it when I get SEAHORSE back on her trailer...Puggsy

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
Beene your using the stock mac stuff right? I have the two quick disconnects like highlander has. But seeing his setup I see what I need. Why merc makes the connector to the motor so close to the motor I have no idea. All the other manufactures stick out more. First it gives more leverage to turn the motor, second it wont bind while tilting. What you have beene wont bind at all. I Just got to futts with it I guess.
puggsy good question, but I think there is two quick disconnects so the motor when lilted up doesnt twist the rod, the disconnects are solid , dont spin on the rod. So the only movement comes from around the two balls they are attached to. By having two you get twice the play.
Beene your in the monster merc mac club two huh? I also loose those plastic caps to those bottles all the time.

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
you e-know me too well. If I didnt know you had kids on board I would have kept my mouth shut...I had a feeling someone would give me sh$t for the condition those were in.....
Ive used portable propane for most of my life, and never had an incident, then had two valve failures within 12 months recently. One was quite spectacular and involved calling the fire brigade. I cant help think of what this would have been like on board a vessel or even in my basement! I do think the failures were related to the valves being in marine environments and valve corrosion - there was no re-filling or anything like that
After that incident, and realising I use a total of about 15 USD of propane per year on the boat, I get 4 new bottles each summer, and burn the last of the old ones in the grill, outside at home.

This is a sailing board.
You kind of have to go where the wind takes you.
All topics tend to drift, as free association takes over on ADHD riddled brains.
I'm sure that there was no intentional foul, but thanks for bringing us back to reality, Carlos.

Sort of thought we covered the question, but in a nut shell, (not knowing what brand, ie. merc, evinrude, or suzuki) you are looking to install.
All 60 hp engines,(brands) will fit your mac no problem, and will still work fine on your boat. They will not hit the side of the boat when turned all the way. By talking about the install of the very large engines, as we did here, also showed that they have no problem either, and one can assume the smaller 60hp engines would work just fine. Almost every outboard available the 50hp- and 60hp engines is the exact same motor, 50hp-60hp dimensions and weight are all the same in the same brand,The exception is suzuki, and honda I believe. thier 60hp motors are not the same, but will still fit your boat fine. So the distributor that told you the 60hp would not work is mistaking.
As far as quick disconnect, the poster "highlander" above has posted some links to pix's that show a very capable and very easy to obtain quick disconnect from a place called blue water yachts. The motor can be disconnected and stabilized in a matter of seconds, with out tools. If you need a link to them, just ask.
I still dont know what motor you are interested in installing on your boat? I know the size but dont know the manufacture. All though it doesnt matter as any 60hp motor built will fit your mac just fine.
Is this pretty clear? You were told wrong about the 60hp, and the quick disconnects available, In fact the macgregor boat comes standard with a disconnect, its just not a quick disconnect as you have to use a wrench to undue a bolt and switch it over.
I understand the confusion about things when you are told one thing and someone else tells you a completely opposite thing like engine fit and such, let alone the barrier we all have in our language differences.
We want to trust the people we deal with when buying something as expensive as a boat, we want to feel they know best. Sadly this is not always the case, and you did the right thing coming here to ask for clarification. But again you will sometimes get conflicting information. This is very frustrating to people that dont have the knowledge yet to tell whats good information or wrong. But I assure you everyone here would agree the 60hp engine will absolutly fit your boat perfectly. Its also the better choice between the 50-60hp engines in the long run.
