If this has been dealt with previously - I apologise.
The trailer for my 2000X is badly corroded, in some places quite badly, even after washing it everytime it was used. I don't know if the P.O. was as carefull as the trailer was freshly painted when I purchased. Funny, I had a feeling at the time but the boat was toooooo nice to refuse. Still, my problem now.
Does anyone know if the black substance on the trailer is "POR15", or similar? I've been reading their website and it sounds so much like what is already on the trailer. My budget doesn't extend to a new trailer, so I must fix this one.
Thanks,
Brian
What's the coating on the trailer?
Re: What's the coating on the trailer?
Every year on my 2000 X I scraped, sanded, grinded, and steel brushed the rust off and applied every known substance to stop the corrosion. Yeah, like that worked. I believe the orginal paint is just black paint and not some expensive marine paint. RUST NEVER SLEEPS.

Re: What's the coating on the trailer?
I give my trailer a good spray with fish oil every 3rd dunk. I have had no visible evidence of rust advancing and if anything it appears that the rust has abated. A can lasts about 3 applications and takes less than 5 mins to do. I find it a very worthwhile way to maintain the trailer. The only real down side is I have a fishy smelling hand for a short while afterwards (I am too cheap to use the more expensive deordorised fish oil).

Thanks for that.
My reason for asking IF it is POR-15 is that I am considering using it for the repair job, but don't want to waste my time/effort/money if it didn't work in the first place. A work mate has used it on his restored cars and reccomends it.

Re: What's the coating on the trailer?
I ran into POR15 from a recommendation from my son, who also restores cars for a living. I used it on the 625 pound iron keel on my Venture 25. I will also be using it on my trailer. It is a rust "converter" in that the paint chemically bonds with the rust. Also remember that it is so slick, it will not even stick to itself. You will need their product called TieCoat to add a second coat where you over lap into previously painted areas when you make repairs.

POR 15 is not UV resistant... there is a good discussion on web site about UV and external use - and marine use....
Rust Bullet is another option out there...
There is also so surface prep...
