Hello All,

I would like to join you this weekend.

I believe that I have a crew that would like to go with me on this trip. We will be five people all together. I plan to depart from MDR at about 9:00 AM on 9/18/09. I will be sailing as much as possible and will probably not be at Isthmus until after 3:00 PM.

I will make a reservation for the string line when we get a into September. Are you thinking that this will be a very busy weekend?

Finn Its hard to tell if it will be bizzy, depends alot on the weather and its also near end of summer season. But bizzy or not having the reservation assures you a spot. Last time we went the dinghy dock was three deep, it was a little bizzy.

Hello all, even Mike and Bill. OK, I'm going as well. Tropico will stay at MDR courtesy dock Thursday evening and leave with you Friday morning. Bill, I promise to be well on Saturday. See you all there.

You can't control the wind,
but you can adjust the sails.
Blessed be the wind.

I'm still planning on going. Seem to have lost my crew so l may be solo, always an adventure. I bought a new Baltik 9'6" but can't get an answer about picking it up. My old dink is an anchor so l may beg for a ride or use the taxi. BBQ on shore was passable but I prefer the restaurant. I have that Friday off so I plan to leave South Shore Ramp by the Queen Mary as early as I can. Let's hope for great weather, I know the company will be great!

Hello All,

I'm planning to go with members of my family. I'm leaving MDR Friday at about 9:00 AM and with fair winds, I'll arrive at about 3:00 PM. Dinner in the restaurant sounds good.

See you there.

Welcome Mark! A lot depends on where and when you plan to depart from. It appears most will depart from Marina del Rey on Friday morning. As I am in Anaheim and battling Friday morning traffic is no joy, I will leave from Long Beach at the ramp near the Queen Mary on Friday morning. If you search my posts you will find all the phone numbers for Catalina and the details about the ramp. If you need any help just post here and I'll be happy to give you a call. If you wish to join the others I am sure they can set you up with information about MDR. I look forward to seeing you there!
I pick up my new dink on Tuesday so I am all set, just need to buy a PFD for my liver!

Just an update Im still going to the island on the 18th, Im getting a slip Thursday and will leave Friday morning, I havent reserved a spot on the string line as of yet but dont think there will be a problem.
Im taking the two pups, Im using the 6.5 inflatable so I dont have to tow the whaler but If others want to go sight seeing Ill take my 9.5 to tag along. BBQ or dinner at the restaurant doesnt matter to me, we can compromise and order dinner and eat on the beach watch the macs bob in the swell. Bring warm clothes for the evening as its starting to cool off here near the ocean now.
This will be fun hope lots come....

mark, here ya go:
To launch and park tow vehicle with trailer at MDR for a 24 hour period, $7.00
Pay at left unmanned kiosk. (Right one for cars parking without trailers - $5 / 24 hrs)
Cash for sure, not sure about credit cards.
( It just occured to me-- prices went up at mast up and guest docks. Perhaps at the parking kiosks also???)
No trailers alone-- Must be attached to vehicle.
No exit / re-enter without repaying. (easy walk to gas, food, resturants, West Marine however).
You can sleep in car/boat without hassle if you arrive late at night waiting for morning launch.
If staying longer than 48 hrs, you must call a posted number and state reason for longer stay.
If you DON"T receive a return call, you are okay.
You can buy multiple 24 hr periods at one time and display the tickets on dash, face up.
The tickets will be printed covering the same 24 hour period, but the police will deduce you are doing multiple nights.
eg: You get to MDR 5pm Thursday.
Three tickets , $21, will last you until 5pm Sunday.
Fresh water rinse down at pay machines. 25 cents for 1 min. Bring quarters and hose.

Burton Chase Park Guest docks is at the right end of the same water "finger" as the launch ramp.
Showers, head on shore, fresh water and 30A 115AC power at the dock.
First come-first served. 30 something spaces.
$1 per foot per night.
Check out by noon of the following day.
Thursday night, Sept 17 should be almost empty, I'd guess.
No sweat, most likely.

Catalina, Two Harbors is $26 per night for a Mac.
Check out is 8am each morning, loosely enforced.
Water taxi available to get to shore if you don't have dinghy.
Ch 9 hails it. $8 per person - one way- I think.
Gas is available at dock.
Nice resturant, diner type resturant, bar, small store, on shore.
Rent bikes, scuba, kayaks etc.
Bring quarters for showers. 4 quarters for quickish shower.

It's about a 30 nm run almost due south (179) from MDR. Must go westerly some before turning south.
(A restricted zone with fouling stuff to be avoided).

Sue and I plan on getting to MDR sometime Thursday afternoon to set up dinghy and launch.
Overnight at BC Park, leave Fri morning with the rest of the group.
I'm sure we'll talk it out on the docks Thursday night.
See you there!

Well, I found out today that I need to special order my forestay so I'll be the mastless Mac this weekend! I had planned on lifting my dink with the jib halyard, guess I'll need to improvise or tow it back. My plan is to launch early tomorrow from the South Shore ramp in Long Beach, is anyone else launching there?

I'm back! What a wonderful weekend, great weather and company. My new Baltik 9'6" dink was a real joy, thanks to everyone who helped with setup and getting it back aboard without my mast to help.
The trip home took 70 minutes at WOT, averaging 19mph plus the putt past the Queen Mary. The Queen has an operating radar atop the pilothouse, not original equipement obviously and the ship is surrounded by a rock breakwater. I suspect there is a reason for it, no doubt a reason only a goverment official could possibly understand! I can't wait for our next trip, I'm sure I'll have a forestay by then and I hope a new arch with davits. See you then!
