Kevin,

I would love to know the brand of your 4-6gal fuel tanks that fit on the 26M. If there isn't a brand name easily visible, can you give me the name and number of the dealer you bought them from? I will then order 4 for myself. I just hate the idea of two 12gal (dog to carry) tanks.

Thanks

Rich,

Like Mark said, these are the only tanks sold by Arena Yacht Sales. OMC sounds right.

I got the 4 tanks and they use a small piece of aluminum angle to hold the tanks from sliding out of the locker.

Kevin, Where did you get that?

Kevin,

In your photo, I see an extra elevated seat, at the aft starboard corner of the cockpit.

Where did you get that? Are they available for my 96X? Please enlighten me.

18 gallon tanks

Post by waternwaves »

It is so nice having 2 fixed 18 gallon tanks in the X lockers....,

and the 2 or 3 poly tanks........ for emergency and remote refueling...,

46 gallons should just about be enough for any day trip.....lol

Dimitri,

Are you saying you can fit two of the Ultra 6.5 tanks on the SAME side? No way mine will do that. Do you have a picture? That's 27" of tank width. I had to widen the lockers to get my two Value 6's in which only total 22-1/2" width.

I could easily fit 1 Ultra 6.5 and 1 Ultra 3 on a side with my old tanks but adding the last Utlra 3 would only have given me 19 gallons. Unfortunately this wan't enough. Going up in to Princess Louisa and back out we used 23.1 gallons (it was 81.31 Nautical miles round trip and I was pretty happy with the 3.5 NMpg my Tohatsu got at an avarage speed of 7.9 knots). With my 4 new overfilled Value 6's and the dinghy Ultra 3 I had 30 gallons on board.

I cut off the upper part of the filler caps on my old utra 6 and it made them much easier to slide in the locker. Tempo puts a lot of extra plastic at the top.

I noticed many of the newer Tempo tanks have a nice new low profile cap with a different style vent. I got them on my Ultra3s, and they are interchangeable, but (at least at West Marine) they want somthing like $15 each for the new style replacement cap. So it will be a cold day in hull before I get them for my two original 9Gas.

Be careful when you buy your Tempos, that they have the new cap. When I bought my Ultra3s on sale at the WM store this past Spring, still sealed in the boxes, I got one with the new style cap and one with the old style cap. I opened them and caught it before I was out the door and was able to swap it out. I guess if you mail order you're taking potluck.

As someone else mentioned in a previous post in this thread, I'm almost certain those are Duratanks. I bought two of them from my local dealer. A warning, though... they are quite expensive (around $50 if I remember correctly). And, they didn't fit in my X's locker without a little modification (had to cut a little notch in the top lip of the locker).

So, given the fact that you have to modify the locker anyway, and the dramatic cost difference, Duane's Value 6 tanks are probably a better solution. Of course, things might be a bit different with the M.

From an X perspective. Just after I bought and installed Duratanks, Duane came up with his tanks. His idea is better. Less expense, easier fill access.

Sorry Duane, I must have misunderstood your previous post. I thought you meant that an ultra6 wouldn't fit at all, period. This is what I found with the value6. I do it the same way you used to..with 1 ultra6 and one ultra3 on each side.

I also made an 81 mile trip last May and ended up having to go to a Marina on the way back to pick up another 9 gallons to get home with. I probably only started out with about 16.5 gallons though as one of my 3's was almost empty.

Your new setup is quite nice, I'm just not sure if I make enough long trips to make the mod cost (time and materials) worthwhile. If I kept my current setup, and brought along two 5 gallon jerry cans, I would have a theoretical 30 gallon capacity too (the ultra3s can be topped up to 3.5). I guess it is a bit of a pain to re-fuel with jerry cans...especially if it is wavy. But for now, I want to spend my time building a new fuel distribution system with spin-filter, valve, and proper hose clamps. My current setup is leaking air...again..and I'm sick and tired of it. Too bad, I've never seen a 4-way valve so I could have all 4 tanks hooked up at once. Buying 3 of those 2-way valves would be pretty expensive. I see Tony has a 2-way setup in the mods section.

My problem was it was 81 miles up a fiord in the BC mountains and there was no gas available period.

It was very nice to have that much gas available. For years we only carried the 2 six's and you had to pay to much attention to where the next gas stop was. With the 4 sixes I didn't have to plan ahead near as much. It free'd up the trip planning a lot during the 500 mile excursion.

Ok, braved the rain to run out to where the Dwen is stored and snapped some pictures.

Image

This shows that the tanks do intrude a tad into the cockpit foot well. But not enough for me to have ever noticed.

Image

there is room for some soft odds and ends in the lockers too.

Image

I wanted to be sure to show the aluminum bracket that is added to make sure the tanks stay where they belong. Just screwed in place and a bit of 5200.

I don't like the hassle of switching the hose between tanks, but the 6 gallon tanks are as big as I want to deal with.

The Ensenada flotilla took advantage of a very kindly gentleman at the marina and we loaded all the gas tanks from all the boats into his car to run into town for gas. Wouldn't have had the nerve to try that with 12's.

The stern rail seats came from Arena Yacht Sales too. Don't know their source, but I know that they are readily available for the X boats.

The are the best seat in the house.

FABULOUS Kevin!

Now that I see them in the M, I jsut have to get them! Thanks for the Adress and phone number. It looks like the tanks were made for the M. I also like the bracket to keep the tanks from sliding out while sailing.

Thanks for braving the rain.

Duane, I do indeed have two of the Duratanks on each side in Offline. The dealer performed a modification to open the lazarette lockers up further to make it possible to put these tanks in. Basically, he just enlarged the opening on each side.

Yes, two OMC Duratanks or two Tempo Value 6 will fit with just mods to the locker openings. Two Tempo Ultra 6.5's will not fit.

Also a Tempo Ultra 6.5 and a Ultra 3 will fit and it sounds like a Tempo GAS9 and a Ultra 3 will fit as well.
