One other consideration when naming your boat.

When using your VHF-radio for making an emergency mayday call, or even just calling the local marina for an available slip, proper protocol is to say your vessels name three (3) times. Although a lot of times it's less formal, and only said once or twice.

But ... can you say the name three times, without becoming a tongue twister for the whole marina to hear? :cry:

I think I read it on this site that someones Admiral had him name the boat "Mine"

If you've ever seen the movie 'Finding Nemo' you will understand how funny that call sign can be.

Thanks Q...How did you come up with the name for your boat?

Le Zephyr:
Image
Etymology: Middle English Zephirus, west wind (personified), from Latin Zephyrus, god of the west wind & zephyrus west wind, zephyr, from Greek Zephyros & zephyros

1. Is a name of Greek origin, and its meaning in old Greek is "west wind'' My wife and I come from Western Canada and now live in Eastern Canada, in other words we blew in on a western wind;
2. In modern Greek Le Zephyr means a (un dou vent leger) or translated inaequately into English means a gentle breeze(which is what I am looking for..in general) ;
3. Le zephyr is the messenger to Venus and as you can see in the uper left hand corner of SandroBotticelli-The-Birth-of-Venus-1490 also wears a blue cape (just like my boat ) and is personified equally by a man and a woman (just like my boat is equally a motor boat and a sailboat).

Looking at the blue hull potos it brings up as good point : Letter size and spacing so you can read it a few hundred yards away. The blue hull boat in the photos above have a good size letter in the smaller range letters.

How about a favorite song? Especially one your Admiral likes, too.

I went a touch further and chose a favorite style of music - Brazilian jazz - for "Bossa Nova." Also seen "Calypso" and "Samba" used up here on the Chesapeake. I'd rather not see "Gangsta Rap", though.

Criteria:
Had to be somewhat nautical, had to have secondary meaning to us.

I am an engineer and my wife was adiploma nurse till her mid-40s when she went back to school on line and got her degree too.

Boats name is:

Two Degrees Out
Cute !

The name of my boat "Take Five" refers to the number of family members (3 kids, admiral and me). Plus it's my favorite Dave Brubeck tune. Then finally the obvious reference to catching a break once in a while.

I did see a family of four also with a cute name "Four Play". Same concept.

We whet sailing Saturday for the second time in my new boat. My 11 year old son was in the cabin the whole time sleeping...following a pouting episode after I lost my patience trying to tell him where run the jib sheets. My 13 year old was at the helm learning to sail on a close reach and tach. My wife was laying down in the cockpit telling me to not bark orders like a (*^#%$@#*&&^*(...he's never sailed before...and whining about heeling over too far...we were pushing 5 knots most of the time.

Anyway, I might need a few more family trips to restart my creative juices for a good boat name. The sailing was great, but the pouting, whining, and yelling were not much fun (yes I was the one yelling).

Maybe I should name her:
Pout, Whine and Yell :?

Thanks,
Te :macx:

Oh how that sounds familiar :-) After a few outings though, everything fell into a groove and we all started to enjoy. Hang in there!

I've got a neighbor at my marina who tows his 26X all over the country ... he named it "Road Trip." With a really cute cartoon of a sails-up boat on wheels, peeling out like a dragster, with an afterburner flame out the transom and a face (eye and smile) on the bow.

How 'bout :Tex X"?
We named our 26M "Y.B.NORMAL": Not a normal powerboat, Not a normal Sailboat (AND neither of us are considered normal folks)! We get a lot of positive feedback on the name.
