Hello, I have just registered and I am amazed at all the knowledge shared on this site! As you will see I am a novice. I bought a 1973 at an auction for $100 bucks, it is a project but has 3 sails, trailer, etc. needs painting, deck hardware rebedding, rear bunks inside are rottin, etc. couple of questions:
1. Can anyone comment on there experience with the Sailcare co. as an alternative to new sails? I believe these are original and are pretty soft and have some stains and batten pockets that have been ripped by the sticks used for battens!
2. There isn't any reefing points or cunningham on the boom, the gooseneck has a extension with a thumbscrew that goes into the mast slot but there is not a threaded hole for it to enter. am I correct in assuming this is to hold the boom from rolling unless it is unscrewed and is the method used to reef the main by rolling the foot around the boom to reduce sail and then screwing in the thumbscrew to keep it from rolling any more?

I am sure to have a million more questions and appreciate the members who participate on this site, thank you.

Re SailCare, yes, they are wonderful... your sails will come back like new. Have a search using the "search" link at the top of this page to search for "sailcare" and you'll find several reviews.

You could help us help you, by updating you profile with location and model of boat. In 1973 there were several MacGregor boats in production.

Pictures must be placed on a public server such as PhotoBucket. The instructions that follow are for photobucket, but other image hosting sites will be similar and this is not an endorsment of photobucket.

Go to your photobucket account.
Hover your mouse pointer over the picture that you want.
Several options will appear.
Go down to the IMG code and left click in the code box to the right.
Left click in the code box and select copy.

Now, while composing your post on this forum, right click at the place that you want the pic to appear and select paste. It will look like this:

The forum software will automatically re-size the pic for easy viewing and when a member left clicks on it, the original size will be viewable. The board does not actually download, or store the pic, it just uses the code to make your browser do the work. Repeat for up to three pics/post. It is best to use the "Preview" option, to make sure that everything is OK, before you submit the post. There is a three picture limit/post, to help protect those that still have slow internet (me when out & about).

Flickr is a little more difficult.

• Left click on the pic that you want to post.
  Above the pic, left click on "All Sizes".
  Left click on the size that you want to post. Large works best.
  Right click on the pic.
  Left click on "Properties". A window will open.
  Beside Address (URL), is the url that you will post. Copy all lines of it.
  I triple click on it and it highlights all of it.
  Copy and paste this between the [Img] tags in your post.

Joevacs, I have been to your video's and pix several times. It has inspired me. I do not think I will remove the deck from the hull however! I have a cast iron keel. If I could be so bold to ask some advice at some juncture I would be grateful.

Oh yeah, she don't look that bad. I would love to help in any way I can. The first thing that jumps out at me is, it looks like you should lower the boom a little. Drill a new hole in the mast if neccessary to lower the goose neck, but your mainsail needs more room. Looks like maybe a couple of inches would do.

Sending the sails to Sail Care this week. I'm I right in assuming the reefing method is to roll the sail around the boom? g

Yes, that was the design. I would have them sew in a set of reef points if they're fixing up your sails anyway. I've heard mixed opinions about the rolling boom method. I haven't tried it myself, mainly because I would have to undo my vang.

Out of context with this thread, sorry, but I wonder why this forum only lets us link to 3 pictures in a post. Since it is a link the pictures don't take up any space on the forum server nor do they take up band width when displayed like that.
