burning smell from trailer brakes

Post by guseval »

I have original trailer for MacGregor 26X made 1996. I think my hydraulic cylinders got stuck (according to mechanic, who saw them when I put a new actuator a year ago, they were still working but were rusty). Can any body recommend where I can by whole new set cylinders, bearings, drums and what else for this trailer. I would like to replace everything what is on the axial. May be somebody has Part Numbers of these components?
Thank you in advance.
Victor

PS. I am in Toronto, Canada. The trailer is used in fresh water only.

Don't know where you are located, but you can try here;

Or here:
http://www.easternmarine.com/

If you are in salt water I suggest you replace everything with the replacement galvanized version. That's what I did and they have worked flawlessly.

If you smell burning you need to check the bearings as the heat will cook all the juice out of them :( a real PITA, and expensive too :x
If you go to drums, any sign of stickiness in the cable and change it as partial binding will wreck it all with the heat, pdq. Avoid my pain!!

Thank you very much for advises. I called to MacGregor I wanted to find out what size of all this components or Part Numbers from any catalogue I should look for. I was told 10x2 1/4". The trailer is currently in the storage, I will get it back only in April. Do you know any Part Numbers or sizes of Bearing, Drum etc. so I can order the right size before April?

Hi Victor

I rebuilt my 2001 mac26x brake actuator last fall. I ordered parts from
http://www.trailerpartsdepot.com/items. ... mNav=False (cut and paste)

As I live in Bradford Ontario, 30 mins north of Toronto. I got stuck paying shipping and brokerage fees through UPS. Both were twice the cost of the parts alone.

I have had good luck with Princess Auto http://www.princessauto.com/

They sell trailors parts under the Titan/Dico name, Unfortunately they don't sell actuator parts just the whole assembley. I'm sure they can help.

Hope this helps

Victor:

The nearest Princess Auto to you is likely in Whitby - 5 minutes from my door.

I'm there so much, it goes by the acronym P.A. around here.
