Doyle Genoa Life

Post by r.fairman »

My Doyle sail is shot and shredding at the leech. I have used it for 2 seasons in light wind conditions. It has always been fitted with a genoa sock to protect it from UV Any comments any chance of a refund from Doyle.

regards

Thats pretty short life. I dont think the warranty them at all. Macgregor certainly doesnt. My genny lasted 5 years with no sock or UV, and only failed since I got a small rip, didnt repair it, and caught it on the spreader and ripped the whole sail out in one swoop, one day.

rrrrrrrrriiiiiipppppppp............. :| :| :|

I would consider an upgrade to better cloth for nominal amount of money. Check vendors here on the board for people who have options. The OEM sails on the Mac have been 'end run' cloth from Doyle in the past - translated as cheap.

Beware the genny sock--the wind action of a loosley fitted socks will damage the leech. The KH2000 is an excellent sail for the price.

I use a Genny sock but found that it would really flutter in moderate to strong winds. Now when I put the sock on I wrap the haulyard around it about 6-7 times along its length. It takes about an extra 2 minutes to wind on and unwind but the sock doesn't flutter and so far no wear on the 3 year old genoa. Since I store mast up on the trailer this has reduced alot of stress on the rigging when the wind blows.

My factory main was fine after three years except for tears around the "M", which were easily repaired with sail tape.

However, the factory Genoa on a furler, was SHOT (keep in mind I used it 250+ times a year and almost always used the Genoa). I also never unfurled the Genoa so far that it brushed against the mast when tacking, so that wasn't the problem.

I was told I got what would be expected with 10 years of use in the three years? I still didn't like it much. I was looking for new, better sails when I sold the boat - - - and showed the new owner where to obtain better sails.

I purchased the KH Genoa and mated it with a CDI Roller Furler...The KH Genoa has the sunbrella fabric on it vice a sock. I've been very satisfied with the sail this season.

Doesn't the sewn on fabric on the Genoa mess up the leetch when sailing, impacting performance?

The sound and feel of Bossa Nova's old genoa sock, flapping and flogging in a fresh wind, convinced me to replace mine with the ATN Genoa Sleeve when zipper started pulling out of the old sock. These have a system of laces to pull them tight around the furled genoa. Costs twice as much, but it's worth the price because it doesn't flap in the wind and it doesn't flog the sail.

No - You tell the folks at KH (or wherever you buy it at) that you want a Genny for a furler.

I am planning on replacing my 7 year old furled genoa w/ a KH C2000. Anyone notice any significant hit in performance with the sewn-on sunbrella uv protection?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

I can't speak about the genoa, but we replaced the 5-year-old sun-damaged jib on our :macm: with a KH C2000 jib late last season. The C2000 jib also has the sewn-on UV panel, and its performance is much better than the stock piece of you-know-what... It is simply a much better sail all around, and it furls very easily. :) In the case of the jib, at least, the white sun protection material is not Sunbrella - it's an extra layer of Dacron sailcloth.

I have the KH2000 Genoa with the built in sunbrella covering on the CDI furler and I really love it. Just open it up and away you go. When I come back I just roll it up and walk away. My friend who sails with the jib on a furler has the zip on sock and it seems like such a hassle. One great thing KH offers is you can either buy the sail outright, or if you prefer make a series of 3 or 4 payments if that suits your budget better. I had the hank on jib last season and there really is no comparison. Good Luck.
