New Nav Station on our M

Post by bubba »

We just got home from a boat owners dream shopping trip to Seattle :D . I stopped by Blue Water Yachts and picked up a 2.5 Suz outboard motor for our dingy ( 29 lbs ). I also picked up a newly made 7 ft tall radar arch and a couple other things like new spreaders for a spare. I went to Fisheries Supply and bought a 5208 Garmen chartplotter with: 2- 3D maping cards for the Pudget Sound north to the northern tip of Vancouver Island BC Canada and another card for 1600 Western US inland lakes (more later like BVI), 18" HD radar dome (it was the only size in HD), sonar is already on the boat, VHF radio with AIS that shows up on the chartplotter and calls any ships you tutch on the chartplotter screen. I was advised by Tod at BWY's to install a Raymarine sport autopilot that also connects to the chartplotter for course corrections. I went to West Marine and picked up a Fortress F16 anchor, 60' chain, 150 rode and and new bow roller, I also bought my wife folding wire crab and shrimp traps that come in a round bag and stuff. I also needed to replace the main sheet and main hallard, topping lift, the line for the ChuteScupe to run to the cockpit for our A-spinnaker. I bought hardwear for a 4 to 1 outhall setup for my new loose footed mainsail that should be here the middle of June. I bought a new Sony radio our old one the CD didn't ever work.
I was moored at Schilshole marina in downtown Seattle and the little 2.5 hp Suz works great on our dingy visiting some of the 'Breatherin of the Sound' for a hardy potluck on Sat evening on a 50 ft ketch :) .AAARRRRGGGGGGGG

I met a young man at a party last week that is living in my neighborhood that is just out of the US Navy, where he installed electronics as his job and now is unemployed and will work for $10.00 an hour hooking up all of this electronics.

I just made an appointment with the shop today for solar pannels to be installed the 21 th of June, 4 -20 watt units to power the above stuff and my wifes laptop too. 8)

More later kwel 8)

Wow. That was quite a shopping spree. I don't want to even guess how many boat bucks were involved. With all that new equipment installed, you must have some serious cruising plans in mind. Where are you planning to go?

Sounds like you bought some nice equipment there :) . Congrats!!

Have you figured up the watt/amp load of what you bought and what you have already? What kind of laptop is it? Most laptops, not notebooks, will use 60-90 watts. Just wondering why 4 20 watt panels instead of one larger one? These guys...

http://www.solarblvd.com/index.php?cat= ... --10-.html

...have an 80 for $230. I've been using a 40 from them and over the winter bought an additional 80 and 60 watt to add to the boat. At this point I like them. For some reason the 80 I got from them does not match the dimensions on the link above, so I question those dimensions (maybe they have changed).

The best on the install and yes, where are you headed?

The boat bucks came from "one" of my mom's paid up insurance plans from her passing on my 60th birthday March 1 this year ( THANKS MOM !!!). Origionally we were going to buy a 45 ft sailboat but decided to keep our 07 M and deck it our with stuff as if it were going to eventially go on a 45 footer :D . South Florida is only 6 days driving away and sailing from Seattle would take several weeks so BVI here we come. I didn't mention I bought a 2010 Ford E350 XLT van last Tuesday for towing and making into an RV and bought a Port a potty and heater last weekend. I will order an awning today.

Were planning a trip to Alaska hopefully next year and then to drive to Fla and sail to BVI and several inland lakes on the way to Fla. We will be hanging out in the San Juan Islands WA and up the east side of Vancouver island British Columbia, Canada this summer where summer fog is normal and the radar will be great, just learning the system.

The pannels we am getting installed are Aurinco there 3/16 thick and flexable and can be walked on if needed. They will be installed over the deck windows and on the narrower black stripe along the sides for when the boat is healed or sunrise and sunset. They weigh about 2 lbs each x 4 pannels = 8 lbs and the locations we never use the foward facing windows and keep them covered for privicy always. I know there more $ but they will take care of our total 80 amp load if everything is running and don't need to be folded or removed when towing. Emerald Marine in Seattle will install the pannels and a 4 battery setup.

Last evening I installed the VHF radio and the GPS and mounting system. Today I am installing the radar arch and my neighbor is already here and running wire and making up the instrument cable connections, Hopefully we will be done by the weekend except for a mounting bracket to be welded for the radar dome and roller for the mast.

I picked up the radar dome mounting plate it was finished yesterday and almost all the mounting holes drilled except for the XM antana which should arrive any day now. The radar arch top is 7 ft above the cockpit deck and the radar dome mounting plate extends 6 inches above that, with the new offset mast trailering support about 12 inches off to port, and the GPS and XM antanas on the starboard side of the 11 gage 4 x 36 inch plate. By the way I found a great shop to get stainless steel and weld pieces, the mounting plates for the radar dome usually cost $275.00 or more with a 6 week waite in Seattle and I got mine made for $153.00 with tax in 2 days, they usually make SS parts for wineries in the area where I live. I just talked to Kenny my ex-navy electronic expert and most of the rough wireing is done, he says we should be done by Wed this week ( it's nice to have a young 30 year old crawling around in the tight places). Today we will pull the VHF radio antana wire thru the mast and run wire to the chartplotter to show the AIS ships positions that the VHF picks up.

More tomorrow.

Would love to see pictures of your pedestal setup with all instruments, plus radar, solar panels, etc. These are all the toys I've wanted myself but couldn't justify for the size of boat, cost, etc. Certainly justifyable for the amount of cruising you plan to do. Nice to know it can all be done on a Mac.

Happy Cruising

We were going to buy a bigger boat this year but really enjoy the trailerability of our M and want to go crusing to Alaska, the Baha, to BVI and lots of inland lakes and we can't do that as easily or cost effectively on a 45 footer compaired to a Macgregor. A trip to BVI from WA state would cost lots of money and lots and lots of time on a 45 footer and it may take 5 days trailering each way and we would be launching from Florida's oil free east coast and for the trip back up the west coast of CA most folks put there yachts on a ship to go north to Seattle, expensive. Also we have the first grand kid on the way and they live by Lake Cour d' Alene Idaho and I can sail while my wife baby sets and changes diapers :D it is 2.5 hours drive and the Salish Sea is 4 hours drive. Even if in a few years we buy a bigger boat the new system will be a great fit.

The system is almost completely hooked up and if it was not raining today I would take photos. The XM antanna is somewhere in the mail.

Are you planning on sailing the Mac to the BVI's? That could be a difficult/dangerous voyage in a Mac.

You will like Idaho :) . We really enjoyed Priest Lake there and hope to return. You have three good sized lakes near Cour d' Alene. We were going to go out on Lake Pend Oreille, but chickened out with only 5 days experience when we got there and decided to do Priest first. We were going to do Priest and then go to Pend Oreille, but went instead to Kootenay in Canada and really liked that.....

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... index.html

..If you go out on Pend Oreille be careful as I was told by a number of people that it can get bad quick on that lake.

Have fun with the boat and all the new gear,

We got the entire nav chartplotter system hooked up to power yesterday afternoon and everything works at least setting on the trailer. We will launch and try all the systems out on water maybe today between thunder storms. I will take photos today and post them soon. The radar works great and I think it is showing the trees around the boat. The only thing that is left to install is the XM antana and a VHF remote mike for the helm and they hav not arrived yet. I also ordered some new LED interior lights from Sailers Solution so we will be pulling the wireing for now and the lights will be in maybe this week.
My wife ordered a portable Sailrite sewing machine with all the sewing stuff and Jocky Red Sunbrella material and kit to make a mainsail cradle with lazy jacks and covers for the helm and radar dome and to make replacement dodger and biminy when needed, her old sewing machine was her mom's and it was 40 years old.
I will start working on our new bowsprit/ anchor roller so we can add a continuous roller furrler for our std A-spinnaker, to make it easy to handle especially solo sailing.
Our new main and jib sails will be finished by Yagar Sails mid June, only a coulpe of weeks away :D
