Tiller Extension for V17

Post by gb0409 »

My tiller has a hole for a tiller extension, but no extension. Can anyone recommend a vendor for the hardware to make the swivel or the entire extension? Thank you in advance,

West Marine has them. I just tie my tiller off when I want to move forward for a minute or two and it does fine. Never really needed an extension

Is this a hinged extension? I'm not sure whether it has a specific name, but I've been on some small boats that had a hinged tiller than you could pull forward and push backwards to turn left/right more than having to swing the whole tiller left/right...is that a normal tiller arrangement? Is that the "extension" you're looking for, or is it just a longer handle?

those are used on little race boats so you can hike out and still control the rudder. Not much need on a keel boat. I think the hole is there to tie a line so it can be locked into position

Thanks JoeV - but wouldn't it be easier anyway? If yer sitting on one side, to push it over to the other without having to get up...but then wait...you probably don't move the tiller around that much, the way you do in a little boat...right?

I will have to disagree, Tiller extensions are used on boats of any size. The biggest reason you would need one is for racing so you can steer from the high side to reduce heeling or from the low side in traffic.

And I thought a tiller extension was so you could steer the boat while reaching for a beer!

Too funny... I think what gb is asking about is a 90-deg hinged tiller so he can sit on the high side and still hold the tiller handle...like the ones used on the little racing boats - hinged so the front part of the handle can swing from side-to-side to where you happen to be standing/sitting...

So if the tiller handle is straight, not hinged, how would you be able to sit anywhere but right in the middle where you can reach the tiller? :?

The little race boat part and not much need on a keel boat. to me little race boats are 17ft or less. Tiller extensions are used on 30+ft race boats. I think they are very useful for visibility you can sit on the high or low side to look for traffic or sail trim. That post was nothing personal just posing a different view point. :)
