Re: Question about selling a Mac

Post by MadMacX »

Since I was the OP, I thought maybe I should update what ultimately happened. After a series of "tire kickers" called about my boat, I went with the $100.00 demo sail and that weeded out those that were not serious. I had about eight interested parties that came and viewed the boat and three that wanted it. In the end, I sold it to a young fellow that had a family and wanted to go sailing with his kids. He wasn't the high bidder, but he was the most sincere and I liked that the boat was going to be used by a family. After he drove off with the boat, I got a call from another guy that was interested and he wanted to contact the buyer and "make him an offer he couldn't refuse". I just told him to go find another boat. I had the boat advertised on Craig's List and Boat Trader. Craig's List was where I got all the "tire kickers", but the Boat Trader people were way more serious, ultimately it was sold through the Boat Trader ad.

Now that I spent a summer without my Mac, I am again looking at sailboats. No, the admiral has not changed her mind (she still loves the cruiser life), but I have found mast up storage that will allow me to sail when I wish to sail. I'm thinking that maybe a 26S might be just what I need to fill my sailing needs.

My advice to anyone selling their Mac, price it fairly, be honest about it's flaws and it will sell in short order. As I look right now, there is a lot less Macs available than when I sold mine.

Best wishes,
Pat

someplaces I found while hunting my S-boat that were useful to judge the range of selling prices...
www.sailboatlistings.com
www.sailingtexas.com

There are others, of course, such as boattrader.com, yachtworld.com, etc., but those two have a lot of different Mac's on them, and the first one, sailboatlistings has a very large assortment across the country. It should give you at least the range - you'll see higher-priced ones on there for $20,000 and lower-priced ones on there for $11,000...

Hope this helps while it's cold outside for you... I think it's 62 in the shade here and about 72 in the sun... :P

You just never know.
Several years a guy called about a demo sail. He said it would be him, his wife, and daughter.
He showed up with his wife, his daughter and her boyfriend, his son and his girlfriend, and another friend.
By their appearance, I didn't think they could afford to buy a canoe.
I said "lets go sailing".
When we got back in from a nice afternoon of sailing, he said he would go to his car and get his checkbook. I thought I would never see him again.
He came back, gave me a deposit check and bought a new Mac from me.
So, I try to treat everyone the same.

Lots of good advice here...and I appreciate it. I'll have to judge what to do about an actual sea trial when I am actually standing there looking at the boat I think I want...I think restless said she would talk to me when I found her... :)

I'm still not convinced that I would know the difference between (a) a rotten boat with a good captain who could make it seem like a dream, and (b) a great boat with a rotten captain that would make the boat seem like a dog...

Im guessing 12k for an older boat/engine

18k for a >2000 newer engine
