Lady T-boned My Trailer

Post by 1st Sail »

Any suggestions as to how you can check the alignment of my '06 trailer. No damage to the hull. A lady crossed two lanes and proceeded to drive into my trailer. I saw her cross the lanes and thought she was pulling in front of me. Fortunately I slowed down to 10-15mph and honked. She stopped, and after the truck passed her bumper she drove into the side of the trailer. My forward fender bracket tore the whole passager side head light, fog light and bumper off her Ford 500. She dented the trailer fender, and bent the overall assembly some. She hit hard enough to slide/skid the trailer to starboard. The wheel run out appears to be OK. Sat I will jack it up and spin the rim. My concern is how do you check the overall alignment of the trailer frame.
I plan to call around and see if I can find a local trailer mfg etc. or auto shop that can check the alignment. I thought of mounting one of my laser guides across the rim and shooting a beam forward then measuring the beam to center of the tongue near the brake cylinder. Then repeat the same for the starboard side and compare measurements. Any other ideas welcome.

No injuries, just humiliation for her and frustration for me. However, she was very polite and I appreciated her concern and demeanor.

Once when trailering around a concrete pole with my Wellcraft trailer I hit the pole and bent the trailer frame - - - someone told me to take it to any allignment shop. which I did and they straightened it out with no problem???

I found a local equipment rental place that had a trailer maintenance bay for their trailers they rent. Within reason and for a fee, they said that they can check out trailers. I have even talked tot this company about the possibility of them adding a second axle to mine--which requires them to move the location of the existing axle. Their head Trailer mechanic and welder said he'd have to look at my rig before committing to that level of work.

Perhaps you can find a local business such as that which can check out your trailer...

Perhaps an RV dealer which has their own maintenance department...

Good luck! Glad your boat wasn't damaged.

Ahh...trailers are tough. I took the turn into my driveway to short...

Knocked down the brick wall and broke the corner off...this is the way it looked after I put it back in place. My landlord charged me $500... :x

Scraped down the side of my trailer and crunched the fender down onto the wheel...pretty well bent. This is how it came out after I beat the shi^ out of it with a hammer to get everything kinda/sorta back in place. Then covered everything up with some black spray paint. Did have to get a new side light and reflector.

Somthing about "those that have and those that will" comes to mind. I am definitely in the "those that have" category... :?

If you want to check the "squareness" of the trailer, measure from the front to back, leftfront to rightrear, and rightfront to leftrear. The numbers should be the same. Of course, the trick is finding a point in front that is the same distance on both sides from the rear... and hopfully you can measure around the boat. If the numbers aren't the same, it's time for the body shop. You'd think the lady, (Lady T?), would have upgraded you to a Mac X at least. :)

I just reread your post and saw you already have a Mac M so I guess maybe a new trailer is in order, eh? Aluminum, dual axle, extended tongue, oh well, one can dream...
