Hey Quebec1 let compare notes!

Image

Mine's a StingRay XRIII Senior which I'm hoping was the correct choice for the size and weight of the :macm: .

I'm prepared to take a slight loss in speed at full throttle if it results in quicker plane out at reduced rmp. I checked out your model too, which operates on the same principles but decided to try the bigger surface area. These things get lots of negative reactions from many people (if it aint broke don't fix it!) but the ones that do like them are pretty convincing in their before and after evaluations.
I also want to put a pair of Smart Tabs on as well. I think they will complement the hydrofoil with a longer effective waterline.
If I'm wrong - it wouldn't be the first time!

Quebec--do you have an ETEC-60? I'm very interested in how a powerthruster will change the reverse torque drift on the 13.75/13 prop.

P.S. Everybody should update their profile to include their engine as well IMHO.

For sure you two guys keep us in the loop.. These "things" have been talked and cursed about here for years.. Its got to be a matter of time till one hits it just right and does all we really want it to do..

I thought I had read somewhere...I am guessing here on this site...that the factory specifically recommended against using one of those planing wings like Crikey has. Anybody got any info on that? Anyone else using one?

Bertrand, I have the PowerThruster and like it. Be interested in hearing about how much performance improvement (and fuel mileage) you get since hopefully you have good data on what you did last year without it. Mine came with the boat so not sure how much of an improvement it really is.

Cheers,
Jim

If you see any performance gains or MPG or (GPH) gains can you post?

It'll be a week or two guys, I'll give a run down when I have one. Yeah I know what the factory said ..... but they were also stipulating 50hp max as well! I've been trounced by powerboats worse than this puppy could do and I think my worst worry is the damn thing falling off (no drill model).

I'd be interested in your view of any changes in the low speed handling - anything would be an improvement! Most frustrating aspect of the boat. :(

I put a this on our X before the start of our second year as our marina is a bit tight and has lots of really expensive boats to hit. :? I had gone to a 4 blade prop which helped a bit, but not to my satisfaction. The boat does seem to handle much better in the marina at slow speeds. I lost about 1 knot of top end speed, but do seem to go a bit farther on a gallon of gas when at cruising speed.

I had one of these on my :mac19: when I bought it so do not know how much improvement it made !

But when I left the eng down while sailing it seemed to me I could point the boat higher it kinda acted like a winged keel I think

I installed one of these Highjacker plates on my :mac19: & it deffinatley improved fuel & planing

Still debating if I should put one on my :macm: it would let me tilt my eng outa the water without having to mod my seat

PS I beleive Gazman had installed a highjacking Plate on his :macx:

Installed my thruster on my motor yesterday as I was getting my motor and trailer maintenance done!

Here are a few pics of the installation just to give you an ideal on how the thrusters wings lie when being applied.

I used a square to make sure my thruster wings and the prop hub were perfectly straight, applied double back tape , drilled holes and installed the wings. I believe that its important to get this straight on otherwise it will not be as efficient as claimed...ie 22% increase in thrust and 30% increase in fuel efficiency with added low idle steering control. Looks good and everything seems to be made of high quality SS.

As we were checking the engine the impeller quit, ordered a new one 36$ and should install it on Thursday. Also found another leaking rotten part of the trailer brake line.. will be repairing that today. Will be replacing my cracked luff and few strands loose fore-stay as soon as the postal strike is over and the fore-stay arrives... got the luff just before the strike started.

I want one of these, are ckings donutty thingy even more!
Still, I have a wing. Don't know if it helps as it came with the boat. One thing for certain, it makes an excellent step, on the beach/floating or on the trailer. Got rid of the pita swim ladder.
If I got a thrust/bow master I'd probly keep the wing too

Hey Q1, I don't feel so bad with you telling me you're still in your driveway doing this stuff! Yup, mine is there also and my StingRay XRIII is still a virgin. I also found the 'no bolt' installation was/is a little on the weak side, and after all the earlier users comments about them falling off I've decided to make a few further adjustments before taking the plunge (literally!). I'll post more pics when finished.
As on mine, I think you may have to re-adjust the angle of the torque tab behind the prop. The enhanced directed thrust should amplify the effect it has and I thought the original setting that came with the motor was somewhat extreme, and more suited to a boat hull with deeper chines. Not that I could really detect too much out of the ordinary during my first season but that might have been due to the excessive play in the system. Which brings us back to why I'm still in my driveway (Doh)!

The mods are gonna be my downfall!

Bertrand,

Make sure you get those bolts/nuts for the PowerThruster nice and secure. I had one nut come off a few years back. The nuts were on the top side. The bolt started backing out until it was hit by the prop. Tore a large chunk out of one of the blades of my prop. Now I check those nuts as part of my pre-launch routine.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Jim
