Where do you keep your boat hook?

Post by vizwhiz »

I'm in the process of mounting "stuff" on my S...and while I have the drill out  I was wondering where everyone puts their boat hook...?

I know it's supposed to be handy while in the cockpit - need to be able to reach it easily enough - but it can't be in the way or where we'll step on it and bend it.

I have the 6-foot fixed-length pole from WM...and I don't have stern rails on the boat...
Any ideas?

Get some double sided Velcro. Cut a couple lengths 300mm. Do a roll or two around the boat hook for each piece. Put the hook along a lifeline and complete rolling the velcro until it's used up. A roll or two is fine. Instantly available. Cost $2. It's lasted a year with no hassles.

I mount mine between the port forward cabin stanchion and the stanchion forward of that with boat-hook...hooks. Mount it low so people don't try to use it as a handrail though. Works really well and it's easily accessible once you learn how to use the boat hook hook to unhook the hook 8) so you can one-hand grab it from the cockpit.

The PO of my :macx: mounted the boat hook vertically between the companionway hatchboards and the head door frame. It is held in place by one plastic grab clamp. The pointyish end sits on the aft berth floor and the handle is just under the companionway hatch. Very, very convenient, not in the way at all. If I do anything to improve upon it, it would be to screw a small cuplike caplug or something to the floor so the boathook tip will rest in it and make it less likely to move about when rummaging in the area.

Mine simply stands upright, left side entry of the cabin...telescoped to stay in place. It stays there when off the boat, but when on the water, it's in the cockpit, ALWAYS HANDY. I've needed it HANDY in arms reach a few times when on the water, single handling.

The boat hook is always in arms reach -- never stored in the cabin when out -- sailing or motoring. Its a very important (necessary) tool in my opinion.

We have 2 extendable (4ft retracted)...both mounted horizontaly along both sides of the hull between the lifeline stanchions, the hook locates one end and the other end uses a elastic strap locking it in place. One hand operation to use,2 hand to reclip in place

Gyroplanes... I have the same setup. I glued a screw on cap from a 2 liter soda to the floor for the hook end of the boat hook to rest in. works great!!

I just lay it on the deck next to the main hatch. Always handy.

I broke down and bought a stantion mount bracket at West for about $12. I mounted it port side on the stantions that are ajacent to the cabin top. They clip lock the pole in place. I only lock the back and the hook tightly rests in the front bracket. I lock it down when we trailer but I want it easy to remove when I need it without having to go forward.

The link below is it but I did not pay that much and bought it in Marathon last week. We really did like having it mounted on the stantions directly under the life lines. I had it mounted on the deck but we kept stepping on it. Then we moved it to the head and got tired of moving it out of the way. I like directly under the life lines from stantion to stantion mount best.

My other most used location is on the sea floor, however, this has proven to be the hardest place to access the hook from.

Hence the page you linked also has hooks that float, right? :D

Actually, the hook I'm using my brother-in-law and I found on the bottom while snorkeling one day. (It wasn't in Georgia).

I keep 4 at the bottom of the lake just in case I need them. Anyone have a source for a GOOD boat hook. The ones I do not lose end up breaking before they get through a month of service.

HYSTERICAL :!: :!:

I ordered my boat hook from Overton's catalogue. About a year later I snapped off the hook - - - and sent just the hook back to Overton and asked them "is this supposed to break this easily?" - - - and they sent me a new complete telescoping boat hook.
