Blue vs. White, X vs. M SHOWDOWN

Pretty much resolves it: Blue is faster off the line, white is faster overall. (okay, HP ratings on the motor might have something to do with it as well)

We can answer these questions...and more at the JMGT 2011.

We have 9 boats signed up...2 x fast white :macm: ...2 x slow blue :macm: ...4 x :macx: (including the :macx: in the video with 140HP)...and 1 x fast sailing 26S.

Anyone else want to join up????

I will send out the final results after Labor Day (and after I edit the videos to ensure my boat is always in front... 8) )

Cheers,
Jim

The Chase boat was a 26X Mac. with the 90 hp and went by the M of course both boats in the race were heavy loaded and the MacX did give the M a head start tho it had a 140 hp outboard.
Really need compare apples to apples.
The M still looked like it was doing around 25 mph with a heavy load.
I still say the 90 hp for another $1500 is well worth the upgrade cost in changeing outboards.

Trust me at Pirate Sail 2010 I seen from my advantage point of being passed at full throttle last year by all these individuals with 90hp and 140hp that there is a big difference between an X and M with the same HP. The X was faster and the M was safer for the conditions we were in. Vic's X road on top of the large waves and the M was part submarine cutting through them. The whole reason why almost everyone took the sails down and went to full throttle is the major thunder storm that came upon us. I don't mind major wind, wave, or getting wet but I already been hit by lightning once in 1986 moving an aircraft and don't want that to happen again. However there was two Xs that showed there metal by staying back escort the smaller boats through the big storm Knot Shore and Private Island both of those deserve the real praise 8) . Also the both had Honda 50s at the time  .

I to this past July 4th weekend, came back from Sanibel Island and tried to outrace a thunderstorm. This was a full black sky as far as the eye could see and new it was packing a big punch. My Honda 50 wide open did 12 knots on empty ballest with lots of gear. I ran 8 miles to Picnic Island for a good ancorage but as soon as I let down the 30 ft. chain and Danforth anchor it hit us when we had only 20 ft nylon rode out and not set as we drifted and motored astearn. Than 60 mph winds hit us like a bullit. The rain felt like bb gun pellits and we draged to shore.(later a person on the Island registered 70 mph winds)
I was in the water fending off the boat from a tree trunk at waters edge and boat was takeing full force of wind sideways.
It was a desperate 20 min. of me trying to keep the boat off the stump. With lighting every 5-10 seconds and me in water along with 4 other boats that draged on beach was exciting.
Normally I would have anchored to a protective anchorage but a boater at Sanibel invited us to raft up with 4 other boats on Picnic.
Point is I should have anchored at my planned anchorage and all would have been fine, and my better judgement would have kicked in if I was sober. If I had the 90 hp I would easy have beaten the storm and anchored safely.
Sometimes speed in SW florida in summer can mean getting to a safe anchorage in time.

Dave,

Get a claw or bruce anchor, they work much better down here. I have no faith in a danforth for anything other than holding my tail to a beach. They easily get clogged and do not reset which is sort of critical in thunderstorms as the wind tends to shift.

If you're setting in grass, that can be a real challenge with any anchor; although the plows tend to do better and not clog.

Hope nothing got damaged.

:)

DaveB,

I once found Jesus on a lightning storm sailboat trip, so your story has convinced me once and for all that a 90hp is the way to go.

I'm not sure if I'll strap the 90 on an M or an X (one day!) but it makes a lot of sense, especially since I hope to pull kids on water toys.

Faithfully,

FYI - Installing any OB over 60 hp is not always an option. This spring I took bids from several dealers in MI on 60 and 90 hp engines. Each and every one categorically refused to sell and install anything above the MacGregor factory recommendation of 60hp. They'd even call the MacGregor factory in that regard.

Interesting isn't it, that Blue Water Yachts, who sells more Macgregors than any other dealer, puts Suzuki DF70's on their boats.

Yea? Whats with that?? I though we were all done with the .. 50 HP MAX on these boat... In 2005 when I bought my boat.... I wanted AMERICAN Made 4 stroke and Big Prop.. That left me with Mercury... Its been a GREAT motor and I had them before.. HOWEVER..the Marina that installed the motor ? Refused to go over the suggested 50 HP.... long story.. its all here in the archives about that other member and his issues.. In The End? That 50 is Great and I saved about $1500.... for about, what would have been 3 to 4 mph a few minutes total time over the last 6 years.. Good choice ... even if it wasnt my choice..
IF I was to do this all again and knowing what I know now?? I would have bought my boat from my dealer ( Bill @ Boats 4 Sail ) and then bought and installed a 1 year old Merc 75 HP 4 Stroke Big Foot for less money..more speed and more charging amps and it would still be?? Made in America..( I'll support your job, if you'll support mine 8)

And motorcycles, and pianos, and automobiles (well, maybe not the Samurai!), and - need I mention it: OUTBOARDS!

Better Japan than China, though I hear the made in (North) American thing. Perhaps if more of you guys opened both eyes and bought enough of these things, they would open a plant to manufacture them here. :D
From my side of the fence Mercs are too expensive and lately have had more than their share of model problems. To quote an old advertising slogan: 'trying to be number two, will make you better than number one' (OK - could've made that up!) :P
