Hey not being able to watch football because my Minnesota Vikings suck this year is draining some of my manliness. If this loosing streak continues I might break down causing all my testosterone to drain out causing me to join PETA  .

Pirate Sail 2011 Movie

Post by ROAD Soldier »

Here is a short movie of my adventures at Pirate Sail 2011. The unidentified real sailboat turned out to be a Mac 25 with no name who out sail any 26X or 26M there. There were no 26S or Ds there so the Mac 25 was the fastest sailing. I manage to distract him once to keep him from passing me but failed the second time. It turns out Billy’s true pirate characteristics shown through for he was using his engine to catch up to me. Once at the bite I met up with C130King and sailed around the bite on my twin headsail 26X comparing characteristics. I found in strait a ways we were evenly matched but in tacks and jibes he blew me away because of my second headsail I have to take in my genoa to tack or jibe. So for now C130King’s 26M would beat me in a sailing race that involved any turns but that is ok I made up for it in a game of chicken, C130King turned first. Here you go.

Ron, great video. That was some great reefed sailing in the Cape Lookout Bight...15 knots of wind...no waves. Very fast sailing.

The run to the bight was pretty much a broad run. I initially had a reefed main but it was not a good set of the reef and so after a few minutes I gave up and turned back into the wind and lowered the main back into the lazy jacks. I then went from about 60% of my 150 Genoa to all of it. 5+ knots...frequently over 6...occassionally surfing down a 6' wave at over 7 knots. And not to brag I caught and passed "Compromise" (26X) pretty handily and was rapidly catching up to "Knot Shore" but ran out of real estate...another 1.5 miles and I would have caught him.

However, to my chagrin, "Mr. Bill" (Catalina 22) with a crew of Dad and 3 teen-age boys were flying their full canvas and were catching up fast...but I made it into the bight first.

Ron and I dueled each other including a good game of chicken for a couple of hours before we headed for the beach. I have some good pics (including some of Ron in front of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse) and video but it will be a few days before I have enough time at home to download from the cameras and upload to the web.

The Pirate Fest was AWESOME! 24 boats I think the first night in Beaufort NC including 11 Macgregors. Great Pirate Party at the Restaurant which was closed so we had exclusive use for our 64 Pirates and Pirettes ( 8) ??? )

Saturday we sailed the bight and had a cookout and bonfire. It did become a bit windy and it definitely cooled off. Sunday most of us motored back to Beaufort the back way...the bigger boats had to motor outside headlong into a cool West wind. Unfortunately "Knot Shore" beached Saturday at high tide...the highest tide for the month of October...and I think he may still be there waiting for the tide to come back in...

Cheers,
Jim

Knot Shore is not on the shore and heading home today.

Jim's M definitely past us no problem. We had a full boat excuse. The race video will need reviewing to make sure his engine was not in play like "XX"

I'm convinced the M is a better sailing boat looking at the different design.

Ron escaped earlier so no way to catch him with our crew. However, we did stay ahead of him on the way back!

We all had a great time and were really glad to see the out of town Macs again. I'll post pictures and videos later.

We spent a lot of time trying to pronounce Bob's (fishheadbarandgrill) boat name.

The next two across state line trips possible are: 1) Jim/Tony/Pedro setting up an Annapolis MD trip, 2) Bob setting up a Charleston SC trip. A least four of us raised our hands immediately! Other non-Macs commented on our great adventures and want to participate in the next events.

Thanks again for all those who sailed/motored with us.

We really wish we could have been there!! :( As usual our "customers" canceled their trip just before we were supposed to leave. But unfortunately to late for us to get on the road and head down to come hang out with you guys :x :x :x Whens the next trip? We need to incorporate our boats naming ceremony/party/beer fest into it!
Anyway, I can't wait to see the pics!! I hope you guys had a blast!!

Cheers,
Ben

Sorry I missed out on this one! :( If you didn't see my other post on the Pirate Sail Video discussion, I pretty much missed the pirate sail for no reason. I can't wait for the next sail, I'll keep an eye out!!!

Glad to hear "Eel Skin" Erik finally got "Knot Shore" floating again. Wish I could have spent an extra day at the beach...even if it was cold and windy... :D

BIG PIRATE KUDOS to "Calico" Kendal and "Lead Foot" Victor for orchestrating the mass chaos known as Pirate Fest. It was a blast. Looking forward to next year.

Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!!!
"Keel Haul'n King"

And the motor was up and secure...I am just a better sailor and have a faster boat...

Ron, to accuse me of using the motor to outrun you. Really. I was only running the motor to charge my dead house batteries. Out running you was just an extra benefit. :D :D The video was even better with your laughter. I can see why Jim is so fast. He puts his boat almost on its side for less drag.

That Mac 25 was Cayman Lady. Not only did he blow past us, he wasn't even trying. He would trim, run past and then back off--I think he felt sorry us. BTW, he had no autopilot or GPS--only paper charts he had printed off the internet.

Erik's Knot Shore, with the help of some Harker's Island fishermen, got pushed back into the water at high tide this afternoon and was headed home.

A really great weekend!

Yep last year I could say I got the Darwin Award for hurting my back but this years I think Eric has no competition  . It is also nice to see Eric and his family will not have to eat the dog to stay alive :D .

Looks like good flat seas, not like the 4-6 swells we had going into Mayport on JMGT 2011.
