Stepping Back 25 Years Into Sailing

Post by GaryMayo »

I sold my last day sailboat 25 years ago. Yesterday I purchased a Mac 25. All shipshape except needs cleaning and a little sail repair of a seam. Came with trailer, evenrude 15 two stroke and three sails. Also some extra parts from a totaled Mac 25.

Will be fun to sail again. I have the motor being serviced and will be repairing the sail before I go out.

I Will be asking questions as things come up. Live in Lincoln ne.

Welcome back Gary. Sailing is completely different from when you left. Sorry you will have to Start again, starboard is now defined as on the left, facing the transom for instance.

Fortunately, the nice people in these Fora will set you straight, when we are allowed out of our straight jackets so we can post.

Aaahhh...welcome!
Currenty safety regulations required TWO henway's aboard at all times as well...I'm sure many other things are different**...

**This board, for example, contains many examples of people who are "different".

A henway is less than a rooster. Lol

I also purchased from seller a 15 foot Chrysler sailboat and trailer. This is similar to the types of sailboats I had before but even this one is larger with more complicated rigging.

I think it would be time well spent for me to find another Mac 25 owner and go out with them on their boat or mine to see correctly how things are done.

Excited!

a hen weighs about four pounds. Ba dum dum. Welcome back to the Legion of the Damned. Been sailing for 40+ years. There's a story of two buddies, Bob and Mike, who had been sailing since they were kids. In their seventies Bob went to the big regatta.
One Night he was wakened by a "Pssst!"
Mike: Whose there?
Bob: It's me Mike, it's Bob.
Mike: Did you get to Heaven?
Bob: Yeah.
Mike: Tell me is there sailing there?
Bob: You won't believe it, 12 knots, fair sees and clear skies all the time.
Mike: Oh Boy, tell me more!
Bob: Okay, are you ready, You're crewing with me tomorrow.

We can only hope, Fair winds and full sails...Old Salt

Sweet, Gary. I enjoy day sailing either my Island 17, Harpoon 4.6, or Hobie 16 when the Mac isnt on the Cape on vacation.....nice combination of small boat skills and cruising at this point in my life...

I no longer have sea legs. The boat dock ramps are three feet wide and fifty feet to the docks with no railing. I am 6'7 and 400 plus pounds. So do I just take my best aim and when I fall in, swim to my boat? The ramps move about a foot down as each foot plants. If I go across with other people we will all be in the drink. In my case, the first step in sailing will be the first step on that boat dock. It would make a good video.

I navigated the boat dock with my land legs OK on my trip to the marina today. Getting a slip is not 100% certain for the following year, but I hope to get a spot. Not looking forward to messing with trailers every weekend.
