Fuel Range? best tanks? 2x12?

on a 96X whats the best setup for long range cruising? 2x12 gal tanks? what brand fits best? and where do you carry jugs?

any guess on a gal/hour on a yamaha 40 4 stroke?

4 gal/hour more or less?
.5 gal/mile?

I would be much more optimistic.

For a 4 stroke at low rpm, aboutr 6 mph statute at 2000 rpm, 6 mpg, so more like 1 gallon per hour at the rpm.

Two 12 gallon tanks would thus give a cruising range of roughly 50 statute miles using the prudent 1/3 1/3 1/3 rule.

Rule of thumb is 1 gallon per hour for every 10 HP at full throttle
70hp = 7gph, 40hp = 4gph and so on...
Most of us carry 2 - 12 gallon tanks When you factor in the 1/3 rule for safety you really only carry 16 gallons of fuel for use

Our 2010 Suzuki DF90 burned around 7 gal over 40+ mi during JMGT 2011. We did a lot of cruising and some 85% power runs mess'n with the locals (see youtube and photobucket videos). That would be 5.7+ mpg.

We carry 2x9 gal.

For an I'd get (2) 6 gallon tanks and a single 12 gallon tank. The 6 gallon is great since you can carry it around and refill it at the local gas station. The 12 gallon is nice because you don't run out of gas and have to switch fuel tanks as often. The best 6 gallon tank I've found that fits without modification is this one. there are others, but a lot of them aren't being sold any more.

I'm not sure what currenly available 12 gallon tank you can get for an . This looks like it would work, but it's a little bit too tall.

6 gallons is about all I'd care to move onto the boat by hand. I'd go with four 6-gallon tanks instead of one or two 12-gallon, assuming you can even fit four of them. Maybe if I was younger . . .

I've never tracked fuel usage, but I do know that I've spent the better part of a day in the Erie Canal at less than hull speed with my 50 hp 4-stroke and used less than 5 gallons. I'm guessing about 1 gallon per hour, but that's just a WAG. I should probably get to know it's fuel usage rate better.

there's no fuel at the final destination, the last fuel stop is key biscayne (but a little out of the normal path), or in downtown miami.

the goal would be one or no fill ups on the round trip... and having a safety margin. fuel could be ported (from cheaper gas stations) to the boat in hollywood (start) but no where else. OTOH, most marine fuel is non-ethanol... but 10-15% higher cost.

any guesses on the number of hours at half throttle for 20 gals... (is it all usable, or just 11.5 gal / tank?)

-fwiw, most permanent tanks, fuel pickup are not on the bottom so dirt/water isn't picked up, but also leaves something in the tank, un usuable. not sure about a large portable... like a 9 or 12.
