Hi-Mod or Sta-Loc or Norseman
Hi-Mod or Sta-Loc or Norseman
Im trying to figure out what turnbuckle studs I should go with. I want swageless terminals. I have decided on that much for sure. I already have the turnbuckle bodies with toggles ordered and waiting. What ever experience or knowledge you have please let me know what the ups n downs are with these or what you know of them.
Thanks
Brian

Brian,
You might look at www.Bosunsupplies.com
I used their "Quick Attach" products for life line mods.

Hi, not exactly sure what the actual differences are between the various brands, but I had all the standing rigging on my V25 replaced professionally, and they used the Sta-loc studs. These riggers do high quality work and checkout every product they use very thoroughly, so I wouldn't hesitate to say , use the Sta-locs.

Re: Hi-Mod or Sta-Loc or Norseman
I bought a Hi-MOD eye and threaded stud for my new forestay only to find out that the swageless stud will not fit into the CDI luff extrusion. Ordered new forestay with a swagged stud and added the swageless eye at the top. I really like the Hi-MOD's and rigging-only was the best price I could find. My only issue was the loctite 262 which I could not find locally. I have 4 different kinds of high strength red thread lock but not the 262. The Hi-MOD instructions say 262 or equivalent so I guess any red high strength would work. Just a little paranoid because of the spinning action of the furler and the use of a threaded terminal. Installing them is very easy, almost seems too easy. I was concerned about how many threads were engaged when I tightened it so I called Hayn. The tech assured me it was correct. If you test fit before using thread lock make sure you don't tighten it down, these connectors need the lubrication of the thread locker while going together which then of course locks it once it cures. I haven't tested mine yet and I will tie my jib halyard to the bow pulpit as a safety backup.

THanks for the response guys. Ualpo have you tried a machinist supply house. Might be able to find the 262 at Fastenall they seem to be popping up everywhere now. I love that store saved my beans a bunch of times.
The Sta-lok and Hi-Mod are my two favs of the trio. The Hi-Mod has a real nice lookin crown that holds the outer strands in place for assembly. I like the looks of that.

Re: Hi-Mod or Sta-Loc or Norseman
Is this for the forestay only or also the shrouds? I weighed all of this when I re-rigged our 26 and finally had rigging only make up the forestay with swaged on fitting and made...

...the rest of the rigging up myself...............

I'd go the same route again. The forestay with the ends I believe was less than $50,

Re: Hi-Mod or Sta-Loc or Norseman
I reriged all my standing rigging back in 1981 on my Alberg 35 with Sta-loc.(Sta-loc was new at the time and I was worried)Went for a 3 year trip from Cape Cod thru S.America and got into 40 ft. seas for 3 days leaving from Beaufort NC to St. Thomas. We were close to knock down so many times and blue water totally filling cockpit on 30-80 degree heal and not once did I have a problem with the Sta-loc fittings.
That said, you don't need them on a 25 ft. sailboat but if you are determined than only use them for the head stay. Toggle on both ends.
I replaced my forestay on the Mac.x,with one wire size up from stock 1/8 to (5/32) and swage with upper and lower toggle, I feel that is plenty of support for my Mac.x.
Also replaced upper side stays with same. (Stock upper side stays are 5/32).
Turnbuckles are nice and easy to fine tune underway, just a mater of how big your pockets are and how much you really want them.

Sumner you do great work, I have noticed that in your write-ups and you go into great detail explaining what you done. Good job and great ideas. Thanks for sharing the wisdom. Im gonna go ahead and replace all the rigging. I already have the turnbuckles. I am planning on using a Johnson lever on the aft stay to help with mast raising.
Dave...Beaufort NC Huh. I love that place. As far as I can remember my family has vacationed there. We share a place over on Atlantic beach close by with my Mom n Brother. I just cant stay away. Headed to St Thomas is a heck of a haul. My hats off to ya. the 3/16 is a bit of over kill but I like the idea of having the extra strength, It seems catastrophe follows me at times and the thought of that aluminum tree coming down on my head or the kids scares the crap out of me. In the past my family had a knack for getting caught in rough weather but there is a way to avoid it, weatherband radio and planning. LOL. Having only the toggles I could still go with the 5/32. I'll look into that too. It is still an upgrade with less weight and expense than the 3/16. Thanks.

Good call propnut! I've seen Fastenal in my town but never went in. They can get the 262 but had Vibra-tite 131 which has the same characteristics. Also browsed the selection of 304 and 316 fasteners they have. It will be my new go to store for fasteners.propnut30 wrote: Might be able to find the 262 at Fastenall they seem to be popping up everywhere now.
