Pedestal Guard for M
Does this pedestal gaurd (see link below) mount to the fiberglass pedestal with screws or bolts? BWY just tells me "installation hardware is included and you just drill holes". It seems like this could be ripped off in an emergency hand hold situation if it's just screwed, or bolted, to a relatively thin sheed of fiberglass. I just want the guard to mount a table and cup holders from Snap It, but want it stout enough to serve as a hand hold too.
Can anyone comment on the installation and it's strength? Also, will the Snap It cockpit table mount okay to the flush mounted pedestal gaurd?

I have the same thing - not installed yet. Looks easy enough to install with bolts. There are a few panels allowing access to the inside. I would not screw it.
As for strength for a handhold, it should be as strong as the pedestal. God knows I've done some emergency grabs to the wheel... On the M it seems it would be a bad idea to attach the mainsheet as the pedestal will not handle the stress.

On an
with a glass fibre pedestal mount, as mine is, I have been thinking of getting one made which bolts right down to the floor and uses the bolts holding the pedestal itself, this would be even stronger than the pedestal, due to direct attachment to the floor and some kind of bolts through the pedestal as well, I'm thinking?

I installed the BWY pedestal guard on my 2007 M. Comes with Bolts and 2 spacers so you can get a straight vertical alignment. It's plenty strong.

Could you post a picture of your mounting and spacers?fishheadbarandgrill wrote:I installed the BWY pedestal guard on my 2007 M. Comes with Bolts and 2 spacers so you can get a straight vertical alignment. It's plenty strong.

I can't stand people using the pedestal (FG) as a handle. I can just see someone putting full weight on it at the wrong angle one day by accident and BAMM! small sun roof in the back berth. (or even breaking the seal around the base) either way if someone pushes it too hard its a bunch of work.

I talked to Gail at Blue Water Yachts and found out they have a combination pedestal/table for $215. So I ordered one today. She sent me pictures, but I don't think it's on their website yet.

It has already happened - to me!yukonbob wrote:I can't stand people using the pedestal (FG) as a handle. I was setting up at the ramp one day and I guess there was just a bit too much stress on the pedestal because it suddenly snapped, right at the base on the bead weld that attaches the floor flange to the steel post. Luckliy I was still under warranty and a new one was shipped and installed. I have ever since been leery about anyone using the pedestal to grab for balance. I don't think they are all that strong, maybe I just got one with a poor bead weld at first, the new one looks much better but I still do not trust it.

Hey Terry! I know! Every time I catch myself putting some weight on it I can feel it flex a little then I let off. And when I see other doing it and not really realizing what they're doing scares the crap outta me! If you think about the force on it (even 20-30 lbs on the end of a 4ft lever on a 45 degree angle) thats a lot of torque on the base. If someone were to actually use it to lift themselves or fully brace themselves it should easily snap off. (i'll let someone else more ambitious do the math cause it's gonna happen

Re: Pedestal Guard for M
Has anyone ever witnessed a broken pedestal on a
?
I mounted a BWY handle on mine for a handhold - primarily so if one needed to grab something quick, they would not grab my chartplotter mounted on top of the pedestal.
As far as the construction of the pedestal, it is substantial fiberglass bolted with large metal brackets with substantial bolts. Anything can break (reference the sailboat in a race off California last week, a large wave hit from behind, slammed the person steering into the wheel and broke that pedestal) but my guess is that the
pedestal is pretty robust and not worth getting too worried over.
If someone really put alot of force on the handle, the handle would more likely break where mounted to the pedestal before the base of the pedestal would break.

Re: Pedestal Guard for M
Mine seems "shaky", but frankly people are going to grab the pedestal no matter what you do, so I'd rather have them not pull my chart plotter off the top. I've been considering having a 1.5" U tube made that mounts to both the pedestal and the deck to eliminate any question of damage, but that will just introduce more things to stub my toes on.RobertB wrote:Has anyone ever witnessed a broken pedestal on a![]()

I wish I had the stainless steel pedestal--Much smaller on deck and easier to get around as well as stronger.
