ETEC-60 Tilt Lock Issues?

Post by FAAbaddog »

All,

My 2011 ETEC-60 was recently taken to my local 'rude" dealer here in Pensacola, FL...I asked to have the tilt lock repaired as it will not rotate at all... :o

I assumed under warranty right? WRONG, factory does not cover according to round one with the local "rude" shop so I am out $200+ for the bill... :?

WTF, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I believe this to be a systemic issue with all lower HP ETECs... :x

Thanks!

Respectfully,

Spend another $100 for the factory repair manual. I buy these for every vehicle I own and they always pay off relatively quickly.

I have the same motor and use a rubber mallet to move that dang thing. It's not for trailoring, but a 2x4 doesn't like to stay in place.
What I need to do is take that rubber mallet and shape it into a nice form fitting shock for hitting the highways. The list continues... :(

Sorry for cluelessness, but what is the tilt lock?

Are you referring to the metal tab that you swing down to hold the motor up and take pressure off the hydraulics once it's in the up, or tilted, position?

I ask because I have the 2011 60 HP ETEC as well, haven't noticed a problem. But I'm primarily in fresh water.

Thanks,

Joe

The metal ear to hold the engine up is a joke: try lowering the engine with the ear in place, and the metal tab will promptly bend.
I have been using a piece of styrofoam. I lower the engine, press the piece into shape, and discard it when it starts to crumble.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that and cover it with duct tape.

Good news, but it is so annoying that you have to push suppliers all the time!

Interestingly, I had a similar or the same problem, with my '09 Etec 60, in that the support just would not move, I eventually moved it with the help of a large hammer and a block of wood, but it was always stiff. I didn't need it very often because the boat is kept in the water all summer, but this year I tried it a couple of weeks ago, and it was easy to move by hand. I do not know why it decided to free itself off. Odd!

Paul.
