Poor Man's Autopilot - Wheel Brake (?)

Post by Ponk »

I've seen posts from 2008 about a wheel brake (poor man's autopilot) available Kelly Hanson Marine that fit a MacGregor with relatively little work. I called KH Marine last year and they had none left. I followed up this year but it seems like they have closed.

Can anyone tell me where I can find it now? I have been using the bungee chord method and would like something a little better.

Thanks in advance.

My homebrew adjustable wheel brake comprises a 1" wide fabric fabric strap (e.g. from Ace Hardware, etc) over the top of the wheel hub. with ends hanging down. A light line runs from one strap end. down under a small cleat fixed low on the aft pedestal face, back up thru a D ring on the other strap end , and back down to wrap on the cleat. Tension the line for desired braking intensity.

Wow, I went to KH website, and they are closed. Must be a sign of the times.... :(

I checked Blue Water Yachts, and they don't have the wheel brake. I'll keep my eye peeled.

I've got one of the KH wheel brakes that I'm not going to put on, since I'll be going to an autopilot soon. It's new and unused. Send me a PM if you want it.

Masteb,
I have tried sending you a PM but it doesn't seem to work for me. The email ends up in the outbox, but not the sent folder.
Can you send me one and I can reply to it?
Thanks,

Hi Ponk--I got your PM and have responded. When I get to the boat I'll post pics, but it'll be next weekend.

If you are on a 26x just replace the steering with non feed back steering and problem solved. I have balanced my rig and sat back and not touched it for 45 min. What a difference it made on my 26x.
