Just finished up a week on the Erie Canal. Went from Macedon to Medina and back. I was surprised at what little traffic there was on the water. Most days only passed 2 - 3 other boats and plenty of room to tie up in the evening. A great adventure and life was good at 6 miles an hour. The looks look intimidating but were not bad.
We rented a 42 foot canal boat that was roomy, comfortable and surprisingly easy to operate. It weighed 15 tons - every thing was steel on it. The bow thruster was the secret weapon to handling. Between that and the big ole rudder you could rotate the boat in the middle of the channel. A lot of history to see along the way... did not see any Macs on the journey.

Nice. I like the canal, and take my 
there whenever I can. In fact, I think the admiral is planning a martini cruise with a few other empty nesters in the canal soon. I may leave the mast home this time, but it fits just about everywhere even with the mast in trailer mode and the crutch bumped up an extra foot. I can just squeeze under the Fairport lift bridge on the high side like that, if I go slow (it's the bridge that's both pitched and skewed - supposed to be only one of its kind).

One of the best vacations I EVER took (with wifey #1 and my two year old daughter) was around 1972 down the Erie Canal for a week starting at North Tonawanda (Buffalo, NY) in a 20' Chris Craft cabin cruiser with a 4 cylinder Grey (Gray?) Marine engine. Lots of sights and geat food along the way, and when I went, the Canal was busy but the locks still were no problem. I had experience with locks from one located on the American side on the Niagara River just downriver from Rich Marina.
