Sails

Post by grady »

Has anyone here used Judy B (Hyde) Sails?

I noticed some advertizing on this site and also some posting from what I would beleive was someone from there.

So I thought I would give them a chance to Quote the new sails I am having made. Filled out the information on the web site and Imetiatly got a reply with a support ticket number and said a staff member would contact me soon. And that is it went cold after that. I click the link for the support ticket and it goes nowhere and have not recieved anything after that. I was wanting to give them a try because they support this site. If this is not the norm I will call and push them for a quote. I have already gotten quotes back from North and Doyle and been contacted.

I along with many others have dealt with Judy, keep at it and give her a little grace since she's a busy mom not just a "sails" lady :D .

I got my new genoa in the fall since I was told the sheer number of orders sky rockets after Christmas when everyone realizes they'd better order now if they want it for spring. That could explain a bit of the delay, I also understand she usually attends the Lake Havasu meet up which is around now I think.

All in all I was very happy. There should be links on the site that will produce a price other than custom extras like my tell-tale windows. The spinnaker on your profile looks like the tri-radial BWY sells, what loft supplied it?

Here's a thread where she replied many times to some of my questions, you can click her profile to PM or Email her

Be patient, she's very knowledgeable and helpful.

You won't be disappointed. Judy's great and so are her sails. I have a new jib in the works to match my main from her last year.

I too am in the market for sails but need to convince the admiral that sails are more pressing than a number of items on our household wish list. That, and I'm trying to figure out if I can have them sent to a UPS store, workout a trip for a couple days at the same time as they arrive and bring them back to Canada while avoiding the 13% import taxes, legally.

From the research I've done and the many quotes I have gotten, Judy was by far the most knowlegeable and helpful in determining what I needed. Just do a search with her name in the forums and you'll see just how much she knows and how well she shares her knowledge. lol, maybe I have a bit of a crush on Judy. :o

I am interested on people's impression of the Hyde sails performance and longevity.

I know the feeling. :D I'm considering NOT putting it in a slip this year, to save $2k, some of which I would put toward a new main. Depending on how the negotiations with the admiral go, of course. :D :D :) :) :? :? :( :(

The X isn't a racer, or even a fast boat under sail by anyone's estimation, but the main is original and pretty blown out, so a new one should be the next major purchase.

Judy will be getting a call when the time comes, based mostly on the personalized service I see others getting, and the free sharing of information from her on this site.

Just so you know.

Willy
A year after I got the boat I had a 130 and a Spinnaker made by Doyle. I spent a month trying to figure out how to design it. At the time the size of the spin was sufficient and the 130 is great for cruising. Unfortunately now both of these sails are very inefficient in light wind racing. If the wind is 10 to 15 I do fine up wind. down wind it has to be above 15 for the spinnaker to perform. So this year is a complete redo of sails. I did find a good used UK 150 for $300. I still have the original main from 94. It still is good for cruising but need a maximum roach main. With my bow sprit the correct size spin now will have about 200 more sq ft. And would like to get a 110% deck sweeper. Ya my sail cost this year is ridiculous.

Grady, from what you've posted on other threads I'm sure you'll make good use of your sails.

Taime1, I drove across the border to a UPS store, picked up my Genny. Headed back to the border, declared it to Canada Border Services(showed him the invoice on my smart phone) they sent me inside where I paid the HST and that's it. Judy's invoice plus 12%. I was actually pretty easy and I still saved a pile of dough over having it shipped to Canada by UPS(last time there was a $120 surprise at the door on a $400 item with prepaid shipping!).

Thanks Willy - I was thinking of either doing a quick cross-border trip as you described it, or taking the family over and staying a few days either to Lake Placid, or somewhere in Vermont, or even checking out Lake Champlain if it turns out to be summertime by the time I get this done. If you stay 48 hours, you can claim upto 800$ per adult tax-free.

Grady - I'm thinking I should order before you do - Judy will be busy for weeks getting through your list! :D

Hi Grady, (and everybody,)

I apologize for dropping the ball, Grady. My website forwards the mail to me, but I don't recall seeing yours. I'll check the email system and reply right now.

I've been overwhelmed getting a new boat ready for the Havasu Show. I've been doing the tooling to cast a lead bulb for the keel, and grinding the steel for the keel. Trying to get a boat built is like herding cats....

So Judy sounds great (and she DID get back with me on my sail quote). BWY was also very helpful. How is the quality of their sails? Anyone with experience?

Fantastic quality. great cloth, easy to shape with the extra battens (compared to factory main). Sails better, faster and easier and seems like it will last a long time.

Ok just wanted to give an update. Received another email today and was asked the question I wanted about boat dimensions. Wanted to make sure Judy would build sails for my boat not just knock out a standard sail with stock measurements. All boats start almost the same but after 19 years there are no boats that are even close. It looks like anyone who has use her is happy. If anyone has not and is not sure it looks like I will go with this sail and I will let keep you updated on my experience. For now it is looking good.

I have heard she is a really nice lady and people are happy with her sails once they get them. Caveat is there is a problem getting quotes. I have had 2 requests for sail quotes from Judybsails-one since January and another this week. There has been NO response on the recent and a late response on the first. Seems to be a pattern here. Not sure weather she is too busy with her projects or just a bad email system, but there is an issue with the business.
