I just found out that I will have a slip at Menomonee Michigan Marina for the summer season. I sailed there last year for the first time and love the area. I also joined the yacht club it seems to be a great group of people and I am looking forward to making new friends. Anybody on this board sail out of here? It would be great to meet others in the area. I like the big water feel of Green Bay and hope to sale to Makinaw Island at some point. You can also cruise over to Door county from there it is only 16 miles accross. The good news is that With the new Merc 60 hp I will never be more than one hour from shore while sailing this area. The downside is that the boat will be three hours away instead of 30 minutes at my local club. I found a 1980 Cal 23 to put in at Lake Wasota where I belong to the yacht club. You'll enjoy MM. It's a nice sail to Green and Chambers islands and Door County. The prevailing winds are usually favorable to sailing out of MM.
A friend of mine kept his J boat "Blue Jay" there for a number of years. He may be back there this year if
he comes back in the area.
I sailed in the MM 100 Miler several times. It's a nice full day race; try to crew on a boat if you can.
You're also closer to the North Channel. Do you plan to attend the Trailer Sailors Association NC Cruise the last half of July?
Bob, Looking at the map, that sounds like a terrific place to have a slip. Do you have much experience with taking your Mac into the open waters of Lake MI? We use a slip across the way on Lake Charlevoix in MI. It's a great sailing lake, but we are hesitant about the big lake. On "our side" of Lake MI, the swells are often enormous and overwhelming, as we found out in our Catalina 22, which was not anywhere as tender as our MacM.
The name Menomonee comes from the Ojibwa tribe for the people who called themselves Mamaceqtaw "the people" who lived in the Menomonee area for 1000s of years. The tribes in this area were Algonqain language tribes in Ojibwa minomonee means "wild rice people". I sailed this area last year for the first time with my new M and totally loved it. There are many ports on both sides of Green Bay and several Islands to explore. The good news with the M is the power to motor across the bay in a little over an hour if the wind dies out or to get out of the weather if need be. Anyone interested in sailing the area this summer? Hello YB, thanks for the info! I will be out of the country in July but the north channel is on my bucket list of to sail places. Have you ever sailed the north channel? Would a Mac be a good boat for that trip.Thanks, Bob
We went on the TSA NC Cruise for the first time last year and plan to make it an annual event.
The Mac is a great boat for the NC. There's lots of thin water which allows the Mac to anchor closer to shore that many other boats. We were in one spot with the bow anchored in 12' of water and the stern anchored in 2'.
The engine allows you to make waves if you have to in order to get off the water or go through the larger channels when the wind doesn't cooperate.
I really enjoy the extra room onboard; most of the other boats with us are 23 - 25' and are a little tight below deck. Launching is easy with our shallow draft.
I tow it behind a Merc Mountaineer. I hardly know it's behind me, although gas mileage sucks (~10 mpg). I keep my tow speed about 55-60 mph.
