Who has a BBQ? Which one?

Post by Champguy »

Hello,

I've been looking for a BBQ grill for my :macm: and I think I have it narrowed down to either a Magma Party Kettle 2 or a Magma Newport. I would mount either grill using a vertical stanchion mount.

I like the cost and weight of the kettle grill, but the size and versatility of the Newport.

Any opinions?

Only 30 more inches of ice to melt before sailing season! :? :x

I have the smaller of the two Magma round kettles. It's a bit small, but my boat is a bit small, so it's all good.

Oh, and it will burn so hot that when I first fired it up, I promptly turned the SS yellow before I knew it, before I even put food on it. :D Same burner would have been fine in a larger grill.

We have the Kettle. BTW, love this grill. We keep it mounted on the rail ready to use. No storage issues.

I have no finanical interest in these guys other than they are the cheapest on the net I could find for Magma grills. Also had nice cover that matched my sail covers and every type of mount possible. BTW, the mount looks flimsy in the photos, but it is very solid and sturdy.

It depends on how many you are cooking for. For 2 people the kettle is probably enough. The Admiral complains that it's too small for lots of goodies to cook at the same time (Meat, potatoes, veggies). So if I were to do it again, the Newport would be the one.
However, looking at the mounts, the kettle hangs off the rail out of the way. Not sure the Newport would work as well.

You also need to keep in mind for how many people you will be usually cooking. We have the Magma Party Kettle 2 and is perfect for 6 burgers or 4 burgers and some sausage. We usually have on board two adults and two toddlers.
I have to say I am also amazed on how sturdy the Magma is. Once we were docking and the old engine died when I moved to reverse, the grill worked as a bumper and nothing got damaged

I have the Magma Newport square grill and love it!! It's compact size yet fairly large grill area make it great!! I mounted mine to the stainless post made to fit into a Tempress (Fish On) rod holder mount. I sunk one in each side of the rail in the cockpit (flush mount) so I can use them for fishing or for BBQing. I also got the little cutting board/prep tray for it and use it all the time. If I chose to go ashore, the BBQ has fold out legs that make it nice and easy to put on the beach or a picknick table. I can store the regulator, propane cylinder, and tray inside the BBQ and it has a nice positive compression latch so I don't have to worry about it popping open at the wrong time dursing transport. With all the mounting options for the rod holders (rail mount, surface mount, flush mount, etc) I can use it just about anywhere on the boat. I'll probably do up a rail mount as well when I fabricate the aft rail seats this year....that way you can 'que on the run....I've actually used mine several time under motor during calm seas. I would highly recommend it (and I too have no affiliation with them but I got mine from Spinnaker Jim's also). If I had it to do over again, I'd buy the same for sure.

How does it hold up during trailering while mounted on the stern rail?

I take mine off. It seems solid enough, but I don't like to leave stuff on that can be taken off. Others have reported leaving it on and it fares well. I guess for short distances, I'd be okay. Long trips, the clamp makes it so easy to remove, why not just take it off.

Mine would trailer just fine in the flush mount but I usually take it off and store it below so it doesn't get stolen. I know you weren't asking me but I threw in my two pennies anyway :)

I have two grills mounted on the Mac: the one that the boat came with is a SeaChef grill. I had bought a second one, a Magma, and will have to admit that the SeaChef works much better: easier to lit, the lid is hinged and stays in place instead of tottering cleverly on the edge, and it even grills better, I think. The Magma cover is cumbersome and unstable, in spite of the gimmicky point of balance. That's why I was so miffed when we lost the SeaChef Grill in the bahamas, after motoring over some bouncy seas that loosened the two-points of attachment underneath (phillips screws). They do not make the SeaChef anymore, but I was lucky enough to find one of the last models for sale and I jumped at the $100.00 chance (shipping included). I still keep the Magma and use it for veggies, but the main course will go over the SeaChef.

I have the Magma kettle grill mounted on the stern rail. 2 ribeyes and 2 ears of corn will pretty much fill the grill, but it's OK for just the Admiral and I.

We always remove it when trailering the boat.

I believe the older Magmas had lids that weren't hinged, but my kettle style definitely is. This came up a little while ago, but I can't find the thread now.

I have the Megma Newport squire one with legs. Gally slave likes it on the cocpit sole in front of step so she handles the grill and stove with ease and no wind worries.
I/she like this grill and last week saw almost same type grill at Lowes for $79. It is all stainless. If you purchase this I would recommend a adjustable regulator as many have stated 425 degrees at lowest setting.Withe the regulator your close to the cost of the Newport on sale.
We store it in Vberth as this is our storage area along with Dingy.

I have a Dickerson small Sea-B-Que which we have been quite happy with. I do detach it from the rear stanchion when underway and it stows nicely under the v berth. I would post a pic but not sure how to do that?

I have an older Magma. It has a distressing ability to drop the propane tank and regulator out of the grill. I think they have solved this problem on newer models, but check to make sure.

Magma can't remember the model, but square and a 12x18 surface maybe a little bigger. Love the bbq and lots of room, but have yet to find a good mounting system. Might just go to the legs especially now with the full enclosure.
