Bias or Radial?
I've decided to replace all my tires. So now the question, Radial or Bias ply?
I don't understand the difference. Stock is a bias tire and this seems like the best for the job, but why would you use a radial on a trailer?

Re: Bias or Radial?
I have radials because new tires were part of the sale conditions and I had no say.

Re: Bias or Radial?
Hello,
I went with radials. They run a lot cooler than bias ply which keeps the whole hub / bearing / wheel / tire assembly cool and happy. Some will say that it could sway more but I've not found that to be true.

Re: Bias or Radial?
If they were the same price - I would go with radials. Performance wise, I would choose radials for cornering and handling but since this is a trailer this does not matter, if less expensive I would go with bias ply. Both will likely need replacing due to age versus wear.

Re: Bias or Radial?
Russ, if I remember right you trailer your boat twice up to/back fom a slip each season...in this case I would go Cheap bias ply since you are likely to replace on time as noted above.
I'm on my fifth year on my biases and will probably pitch them after this season

Re: Bias or Radial?
Well, I ordered radials. Got a call, out of stock. So my backup plan was to buy bias. So that's what I did.
Bought 4 of 'em so with my new axle I'll have 4 equal tires.
This week all the goodies should arrive. Looking forward to a 4 axle trailer with new wheels.
Thanks all...
Oh yea, Stephen, next time you are out here, make time to go sailing with me.
We'll be traveling much in the next few weeks, but should be back to sailing in July.

Wow. I'm so glad this thread is about tires. When I first read the title I thought it was about mohel technique.

Re: Bias or Radial?
I have 5 years on my Bias tires here in SW. FL. and spray foam on them once a year. They are like new.
Better to put them on a two Axel Trailer than 4 axels.

Re: Bias or Radial?
After 5 years, I'd be replacing mine. It's not the looks, its the wear and tear of supporting the boat 6 months a year.

Re: Bias or Radial?
Way to go Russ, you will be happy with the diamond plate fenders they look great on the trailer. As for tires I went with the bias tires... There is no advantage to using a radial on a trailer, so you just burning money. Besides for me the bias looked better... I ordered my tires from e-trailer. I needed rims (and tires) for my extra axel, and after researching it I just could not beet the mounted tires on rim with free shipping.RussMT wrote:I ordered aluminum diamond plate fenders.
