I just went and looked (home now), and the tracks are the same size, so I can move the pulleys (are these it called a fairleads?) from the tracks on the cabin top to the tracks at the cockpit, then route the jib halyards forward to the lewmar winches and cam cleats on the cabin top.
I think you'll find that the jib lead blocks don't work as well as the spring stand-up type lead blocks, since the latter have to turn the line much differently (like 180 degrees) with the genoa sheets. They're designed to function differently.

Thanks guys. So, what exactly is a "self-tailing winch" then?

Still amazed at how expensive those winches are! :P

Dave,

Before you make any purchases, entertain the idea of investigating the use of Bill's Eazy Cleats.

I got tired of having to reach forward to grab a genoa sheet every time I tack. I purchased a set of Bill's Eazy Cleats and have been wondering why I have not heard more about them on this site?

These little devices attach to the tracks on either side of the cockpit, and eliminate the winches completely. The sheets are right there alongside you, easy to grab, and work quite well.

Seriously :!: if you are going to rearrange how your genoa sheets are configured, then look into the use of Eazy Cleats.

Ray

P.S. I just did a search, and found this one from Jim, otherwise known as C130 King.
Got mine from Bill @ Boats-4-Sale. They work great. Don't need any extra blocks. Tremendously simplify single-handing versus running the sheets back to the winches and then through the jam-cleats on the cabin tops.

I haven't used my winches since 2006.

I think Bill got $100 back in 2006. I presume he still sells them... I think they are slightly different from the ones at KH but I don't know the specifics.

Cheers,
Jim
Here is another search result.

These might be better:

Swivelling may provide a degree of greater flexibility/ease but could be less strong? Not sure really.

If you are pulling a line on a winch, you are tailing the end (removing the excess) as you pull. If you go to put the winch handle on a standard Mac winch and crank, you have to make sure the line doesn't foul on the winch -the classic foul is an override, where the line crosses over itself.

A self tailing winch has a small metal lip up top which keeps the line from fouling the wraps on the winch for you.

Overkill on the Mac IMHO.

Ooooh, yeah. I don't use the winches any more. Not even for mast raising. But when I did, tailing the line was nothing. It's not like you have to crank so hard you need both hands. The dodger gets in the way of the handle anyway. I just use them as free-wheeling belaying posts before going through the cam cleats, so I don't burn my hands if I need to pay some out under load.

The only winch I use anymore is the one on the starboard side to raise the daggerboard. But I must admit I sure would like winches in the back behind the genoa track. In heavy wind it's really hard to pull in the genoa.

I don't usually even use the genoa, but when I have, I've turned into the wind a bit for a fisherman's reef so I could sheet it in tighter, then bear off again. Certainly would be more easier to use a winch, but part of the charm of this boat is the lack of equipment and systems, and the maintenance that goes with it.

I installed block raisers under my cam cleats @ the winches & this helps a lot in preventing cross overs as it keeps the line higher on the winch

Both are seized now. :( I'm going away for a water week soon, so will try to free things up.
I'll give yours the once over at the MMOR.

Hey guys...on thinking it over, I really like the idea of Bill's Eazy Cleats. Where do I buy them? Are there any similar alternatives to consider? I really like the idea of mounting to the track and not having to drill any holes.

Thanks!

Hmmm...now why is this "Skywinch" rope winch so cheap, while *functionally similar* sail winches are so expensive? "Economies of scale" my a$$.

And here's a video...methinks it might be possible to adapt this idea to halyard winches perhaps?

Bill is a member of the board, and I believe he advertises on the site. Divecoz is the president of Bill's fan club.
