Finally..pics of my W/21

This is my W/21.....she has the W/21 emblems on the hatch cover and at the rear of each cabin window.

I purchased this beast for way over market value of $250 with little to no running rigging left in usable condition, standing rigging shot, holes in the transome but the solar fan above the V berth worked!!! Also...no sail inventory She was full of about 300 gallons of water when i purchased her!!! The trailer literally fell apart on the way home from blueridge Georgia to Greenville, SC

After almost 2 years of work i removed all hardware from the boat, sanded and painted her both inside and out. I used poly based porch/patio paint for topside/cabin paint and a true bottom coat sice she will stay in the water most of the time.

I had to rebuild the keel from scratch using 1/2 and 3/8 thick steel as well as melting down and repouring the lead from the old keel. She was about 400lbs, she's now right at 450lbs. It's about 5 inches longer than the stock, a little more narrow but 2-3 inches thicker.


I now have two main sails for her, a full size jib (150 i believe) as well as a storm jib for windy days.


I made all standing rigging myself. I also spliced all the running rigging myself. I have a VHF/GPS unti installed, a 40 watt solar panel, 4 lawn mower batteries running all LED navigation/cabin/cockpit/anchor lights. Cheap ebay depth finder. Custom V and side berth custions and 8 LED breaker panel.

I plan on adding a GPS chat plotter, a porta potty as well and a custom anchor locker.

sorry for the trash in the pics...i had a trash bucket filled with empty bread packages that the geese decided to spread all over the bank while i was getting food.

I enjoyed spending the next hour fishing a few plastic wrappers out of the cove.

Nice Job. Do you know what year she is. If you are unaware, the reason the "W" is on the sail instead of the "V", is that Roger MacGregor's first endeavor was called the Westwind. Started with a 19 ft which evolved into the 21. We has a 68-V-21 and loved it. Fair Winds and Full Sails....Old Salt...

There are no numbers/engravings under the port side cockpit like many others mention but there are a set of numbers paint there.

I cant remember exactly what the were but they were either 64 or 68...i was not sure if she was either the 64th or 68th made or if this was the year built.

Wow...that's a lot of work, and it looks like you have a nice boat to enjoy also!

Reading this post just makes me think about how long Roger really has been in this business, and how well-deserved his retirement really is... This boat is around my age...built in the mid-1960's and still alive! That's almost 50 years ago, and he was still going strong when he decided to retire...

few more pics of her...will have been living on the lake in the water on her mooring for a year in oct.

They will be lowering the lake in oct for the yearly "cleaning" of the lake which means i'll be pulling her for some new mods.

I plan on trying a few keel designs that i'll be working on when the weather cools down a bit.

First will be a 400 lbs stub keel...other will be a 12" shoal type keel and last will be a full 5 ft solid 1" x 12" shaped steel (foiled on front and rear) similar to that of what comes on the V22

Keels will be done on the cheap, can you say scrap steel?

All etched in concrete cleaner, coated in por15, sealed in us epoxy sealer then a base coat of epoxy paint...if thats not enough then coated with a albrative paing... spelling????

I'll also be touching up the alberative paint on the hull of the boat from getting stuck on a log and cleaned/coating the lead kick up rudder in alberative.

I'll work on some interior pics this weekend after the stereo system install. I need some good tunes while i sail!!!!





I'm still keeping her motorless, keeping with purity of sailing alive!!!!

Lets just say that i'm not the best sailor in the world....but I can point this joker with the best of them...narrow channels, plus light winds against current...i've yet to have to paddle home. I love sailing!

the entire top side and base coat for bottom side and interior was done in a poly based porch/patio paint.

this boat is in direct sunlight on the water for a year. the paint job was done right when i bought the boat...some 3-4 years ago. The paint was about 35 a gallon. Two gallons did the entire boat with about half a gallon left over.

It's still holding up GREAT. Thanks to changed in life she sat under trees for about a year after her paint job and had to go through some serious bleaching and power washing. I go out and scrub her about once a month. I pull her right up to the dock by my front porch and hose her off with some bio friendly soaps.

Other than a few scrapes made by my boom when the rope on the retaining clip holding her up on the back stay broke...she still looks as good as the day i purchased her.

And i can assure you...my son was 2 when i painted this...I was quite distracted at times during this restoration and didn't do the best job possible...humidity was also not on my side...thank you living in the south.

But over the poly base paint i put a marine alberative paint..spelling? and it's holding up great. You can see that this lake gets really muddy after big rains. The only portion that didn't get this paint was the rudder. I dunno why i spaced on that one..but i have a lot of growth there. the rest of the bottom side looks top notch.

So...cheap homedepot paint...can save you some cash and last...in my case for at least 3-4 years and still counting

Its a pool ladder. Came with the boat. About the only reusable item that came in the cabin of the boat.

I haven't used any rustolium products. I know it works ok.for.automotive purposes. The porch and patio paint is made for high traffic use. They do make or used to make rustolium top side paint.

i usually store the ladder inside the cabin but last week while i was installing the new speakers in the boat i had the ladder on on the side of the boat so my son could swim. I have less issues working in the cabin of the boat when my 5 yr old is in the water! I use the boom as a clothes line when not under sail. I didn't want a wet ladder laying on my side berth cushions or on my clean towels!!! As you can see in the pic...the lake water around these parts can look a bit dirty.

Stone love..where is that sailing venue? Lake in SC?

i wouldn't call it a sailing venue...I live on Saluda lake. Not the best lake for sailing but it's pretty good for fishing, kayaking. Not as many PWC's as some of larger lakes here in the upstate (hartwell, keowee). I personally prefer to be sailing Hartwell.

I'm looking forward to one day getting her down to the keys to do some island hopping. I figure will all this constant tacking that i do in very unpredictable conditions it will probably amazing to get out in some more open water, spending less time trimming my sheets and more time holding the tiller steady while enjoying a beverage.
