Mac 22 rudder

Post by jburt »

I'm brand new to sailing and recently purchased a 1985 Mac 22. The way the rudder was rigged when purchased causes me to have to "manhandle" the rudder in order to raise it--to reach down and grab it in order to raise it above 90 degrees--and then tie it up with a separate line. That can't be right! Perhaps it's improperly set up. a full description--or photo--of the proper set up would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look under the RESOURCES tab above and find the right manual for your boat - it might have a decent pic of the rudder setup.

I do have some pix in my files but Ill have to hunt for them.

Hello Jburt...welcome!

So....there is one rope that runs from the hole in the front of the lower rudder section, thru the cleat on the upper section to the hole in the back. If you look at this picture http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ewimg=3780 it should show the rope on the lower section clearly, but unfortunately...I used cheap white rope :( so it may be hard to see on the top. With the old lower unit on my rudder (before electric motor), I had to get my hand wet to start it down, but could then pull on the rope on the forward hole to lock it in. Then tie at the cleat. To get it back up, I would untie at cleat take the small amount of slack and start the back edge up. I had to hang over the back...but it worked fairly easy :?

Now with the motor, I just untie the cleat and power it down or up. If the link didn't come thru, you can see the mod on the home page under Electric Drive Kick-up Rudder. Hope this helps, and enjoy the new Mac 22!!!...Scott

bmxer, I saw your picture "TRAILERPULLOUT.jpg". I have this same problem. I have to back the truck way in to get it tight against bow rest, then wade or stand on the wheel fender and hold the boat straight against the wind and current while it's pulled out slowly. Our ramp is not shallow, but it's not as steep as most around our parts. Of course when you let the winch loose there is always a 2" gap. The last pull out last year I did manage to get it to sit all the way against the v-block with the winch loose, the trailer has to be super deep to get that done.

Apparently I look really dumb doing this, because last time out some guy came over and proceeded to tell me how he had been boating for 50 years and everything I was doing was unsafe and point out everything little thing that was wrong with my trailer and how I loaded the boat. This really aggravated me because it was sitting on the trailer way better than usual and with the first try.

Is this a problem for everyone?

Sorry for the thread jacking.
Joe
