Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
Dave..something looked wrong with the foot of your mainsail in that video..the foot is the bottom part of the main sail that usually slides into the slot on the boom (horizontal spar that makes a boom sound when it hits your head)
The jib (forward or head sail) is "trimmed " or "sheeted" in too tight ...that sail should be roughly over the side edge of your boat for the way that you were pointed to the wind.
All that being said...HAVE FUN and be safe .....PFDs on please....you have 1/2 a lifetime to get this stuff right as Russ says

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
HI guys
Thanks for the advice. I looked, and that mainsail does not have anything to put into the slot...however the boom DOES have a slot in it. I believe the term you used previously when I was using the Hobie mast was "loose foot"??
I kept that nice blue and white Hobie sail as well....gave the new owner of the Newport 16 the original Mainsail that came with it and kept the shorter mainsail, and the two front Jibs. That plus the Hobie means a total of FOUR sail setups for the lake mast.
Meanwhile, in other news, I am now the owner of a 1977 25 foot O'day. It is located in Albamore Sound about 2 hours east of here. Originally the plan was to block up my boat on stands and use my trailer to go get it...
BUT
I am going to Henderson NC to purchase yet ANOTHER 25 foot sailboat. I am not sure what kind it is, but it sits on a dual axle trailer, has mast on top, and from what I can see in the pics looks like another S.S. Crackboat. He said lowest he will take is $600 for it. I am going up this morning to look at the trailer condition and probably picking it up. Plans are more than likely to strip and sell off parts of the crackboat, cut it into pieces and scrap the lead keel (remember those fellows I gave the first crackboat hull to made $500+ on the lead keel at the re-cycler)
That would give me the trailer I need for the O'day and no messing around with switching boats and building stands.
Interestingly enough when the fellow with the O'day came by to switch titles he brought some "stuff" for the O'day he had here at home....he opens the trunk and hands me a box...inside is a New Autohelm800 (WOW) I looked it up and value is between $500-$600....so I already have made more than I have in the Newport 16. I can't wait to see the actual boat at this point.
Still plan to sell the O'day after seeing if there are any goodies for mine...If I sold my boat I would have to leave this forum and join an O'day forum...I would miss you guys
Besides the Venture23 is too perfect. It's good enough to camp out on, is easy to tow and launch, and weighs half the O'day. I think the O'day would be a good boat for coastal sailing, and the cabin is much nicer, but it is too bulky and heavy for trying to launch quickly at falls lake.
I'll get some picks up of the new Crackboat later on this afternoon when I get back (if I buy it, and you know I probably will)
Cheers
Dave

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
Dave, I think you are 2 boats away from a twelve step program. Ask Catigale about that.
You certainly are bartering your way up. You aren't related to the guy who traded a paper clip for a house?
The O'Day is an exiting boat. Would love to see how that sails. Seems like you are having a lot of fun and sailing too. Nothing wrong there.

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
Well I was right! It's another Crackboat...but only $600 for everything

Trailer is great and will handle the O'day just fine!
This boat is a Buccaneer (Bayliner crap)
I'm not sure what I will do with it yet....there is no paperwork, no idea what model or year...it looks like 27 foot, and it is HEAVY!! The LONGEST 30 miles I have ever towed
The cool thing is the cabin is locked, so I have NO IDEA what treasures await inside
I gotta work on a car right now, but later on I will hacksaw the lock and go below....
I will post pics on what I find inside....hopefully good sails....mast is fine
Has a Johnson Sailmaster 9.9 looks restorable, and it has forward controls (??)
Ohh the suspense
Cheers
Dave

Buccaneer. I remember those boats. Butt ugly, but like the Mac X/M fairly roomy down below.
Here's your boat
http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/6697
Who knows what you might find down there. Maybe full of water and why it's so heavy. Maybe Jimmy Hoffa. The possibilities.
Let us know.

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
No Jimmy Hoffa
3 foot of water
I drilled a hole in the bottom of the hull and she is draining now.....the water was so deep I couldn't go down as far as the 2nd step of the ladder
However I see there is a lot of stuff in it, including a wetsuit. I assume one wore it when they went into the cabin to swim over to use the head
More pics later....

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
My Neighbors Brother came over with his 4x4 Diesel and put her in her final resting place for the moment

Same plans as the 1'st crackboat, strip her to the bones....give the hull away for free on Craigslist...let someone else get the lead out....incentive to take her off my hands
I see enough $$ in the mast, bow pulpit, lifelines and staunchions, rolling furler, Mainsail (check condition later, it's raining now) and misc block and tackle...
Some stuff might go to the venture
It also has a Sailmate 9.9 (OMC) with forward controls looks restorable
Surely more than $600 buying price....
And score a NICE Dual Axle trailer for the O'day
more to come
cheers

Okay...the only possible way you are still married is because you are splitting the proceeds with the Admiral...right?

Parted out, there's a lot of stuff there. No doubt you will get that trailer in top shape.
With your history of restoration, I wonder what it would have taken to get the boat back.
Keep us posted. Very interesting.

Dave,....I think some restored the first crack boat you bought, got bored, and you just bought it back...
This saga is great to watch unfold, and I won't double down on my last lost bet ...
Any reason you wouldn't salvage the lead yourself for 500 and add that to the prize??

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
The admiral, after 17 years of marriage and about to be 18, is used to me....
Nothing surprises her anymore and As long as it is Crack-Boats and not Crack Wh*res I am in good shape
I'm about to start stripping it now. I will take the camera out front and shoot some more photos.
Goal is to have it gone and off the trailer by Sunday....then go get the O'day next week.
As you can see I don't waste any time
Will score lots of gear for my Venture off this new crackboat....I see lots of better pullys, or block and tackle, or whatever the hull you old salts call this stuff...but there is a lot
I found a rolling furler and sail, and a sailbag is full....it's wet, but I hope the rain will abate some today and I can spread the sails in the bag out and see what they are...
Also will try and take a look at the 9.9 and see if I can get her running today or tomorrow
I'm not worried about the lead....to get it one has to cut the boat into tiny pieces, and then take the lead to the re-cycler.....those fellows I gave the first crackboat to did exactly that....however this boat is a SUPER SIZED crackboat and there is no way in H*ll I am going to try and cut it to pieces in my yard.. the Admiral will kill me then and hang me up from the mast for all to see
Lots to do today
I am going to pack up the wetsuit and ship it to Catigale
RussMt I think I saw some nice wood magazine racks for you
Cheers Mates
more pics coming today later on

Re: I'm back...Bimini top and many upgrades
So far :
The pile on the ground is stuff to keep

the pile in the trailer is trash...

I think the Wetsuit will fit Catigale
Two new stainless steel Barlow Winches and TWO HANDLES inside....now I have 6 winches and TWO handles. I sawzalled them out this time to save time lol
AND (drum roll)
A brand new bimini top we found inside and stored dry, fits the Venture23 MUCH BETTER than the one I was trying to use...brand new! wrapped in plastic
Let the games begin gentlemen...more to come
cheers
