Just curious, is there a 2014 Muck-about sail scheduled? Or something similar on the coasts of the Carolinas? I'm trying to figure out if we are heading west, northwest south or east.

I am going to have my 2nd annual Southport Sail (Southport NC.) this year and I'm sure Bob is going to have his " Spring Holy City Mac Roundup (Charleston, SC)" This year. I will have to get with Bob and find out when he plans on holding his so we can get them scheduled. My wife and I are headed over to Bahamas in May 2014 which you can read about on this forum under the Destinations and then look for Sailing to Bimini and then to the Bahamas. You and anyone else is invited to tag along for however long they want to and then come back on their own. Then there is the annual NC Pirate sail (Beafort NC) usually held around Sep. of every year.
I read and enjoy your adventures and would look forward to meeting you as I am originally from MO. and have been on Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock Lake as well as some down in Arkansas

It will probably be the weekend starting Friday July 11 or 18, 2014

This is helpful info! We have our sailing association's planning meeting tomorrow and I'm trying to get some dates/locations so that I can make plans. So many places to go, so little time to get there...

I have limited vacation time; otherwise we'd be right there on many of the group get-togethers and definitely that Bimini/Bahamas sail!

I'm narrowing my lists of destinations down, but the destinations are still scattered. I'm feeling a heavy draw towards Lake Powell, Sakakaweah, Fort Peck Lake, the Carolina coasts, the Gulf coast and the Chesapeake...sigh but I also want to do Huron, Ontario or Michigan. The San Juans and Catalina are too far for my available vacation time!

I am Commodore at a local sail association this year so I'm committed to a dozen local dates but this list will help me shape the schedule for some of the dates not set points on the calendar!

I agree with Vic. We had a lot of fun last year but the drive liked to killed us. We would like to vote for a LOMUCKA.

I can understand the concern for the long drive to the Upper Chesapeake; as it's 6:45hr for me to get to Beaufort, NC for pirate fast. My intention was to afford an experience of the Northern Chesapeake. I would like to switch it up a bit and add different destinations such as Annapolis, Baltimore Inner Harbor, Fairlee Creek, Easrern Neck Island, Kent Island, areas of Prospect Bay & St Michaels, Tilghman Island, West River and more. The problem is I find this takes an extreme amount of time to coordinate, research, plan and even more difficult is the distance and time. I'm trying to keep the legs to less than 15 miles so there is some energy left to party and you're not exhausted on the last day to drive home. I sometimes think an extra day would help or more motor and less sailing.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the same MUCKA route as we attempted last year or maybe try the Baltimore Inner Harbor for a layover or St Michaels. St Michaels is high on my list but its 25 miles from Annapolis. I may have to take advantage of these motor sailors and set an average speed of >6 knots. I have seen conditions on the Chesapeake when you don't want to go that fast though.

I am strongly considering a sail out of Crisfield, Maryland and going to Smith & Tangier Island this summer. Again more research required. I can post if anyone's interested. If there is enough interest maybe make that the MUCKA this year.

If somebody wants to set up a sail in the Hampton area I'm all ears but you will have to do the work. I have too much time and research wrapped up in the MUCKA.

I'm sorry none of this helps the drive for you North Carolina boys.

We have several places we like - ranging most the length of the Bay. At top, Havre de Grace is a very enjoyable place to spend time, good food, very pleasant marina. We spend more time at Hart Miller than anywhere else. There are locations closer that Annapolis to put in - we usually use Harbor Hospital in Baltimore. St Michaels is nice but the most expensive place I have ever been. Maybe we just picked the wrong marina. Further down the bay, we really enjoyed Solomons Island. At the extreme southern end, we stay at the State Park at Point Lookout and every year make the trek across to Smith Island for cake and crabs.

Oh, and we definitely want to bring the boat up to Chestertown. That place is really nice.

10-4 on Havre de Grace, Solomons, and Chestertown, all on my radar too. I called Point Lookout S.P. on the Potomac they said no overnight trailers???

Point Lookout. If you mean boat trailers, several choices. We always leave ours parked unhitched at the boat ramp out on the point - right across from the campgrounds. We just leave a note on the ticket (small fee) explaining where we are. There has been in the past a parking area in the park for trailers - never used it. Then there is Buzz's Marina just north of the point - that is the place they brought the big sharks they caught last year (right off the campground area).

If you mean camper trailers, they have several loops and each has different accommodations. We like Green's Loop - has a large dock and allows pets. Hoffman's Loop also has a dock. As far as ability to tie up our boats, and mine is the largest I have ever seen, if no other boats, then about five, maybe six could fit, but that means some would be pressing up against fenders.

Last year we sailed in and around St. Michaels the week before to make the 1.5 day car trip (one way) count. We have a rule, the boat must be in the water longer that the combined drive time.

When it comes down to brass tax, we probably need to have these group sails. Not everyone will be able to attend each year. Having a rendezvous in the Chesapeake, near Wilmington, NC or in Charleston, SC is a good way to mix it up. I may attend the Wilmington sail more frequently than an Annapolis sail just because of convenience. And the Chesapeake sailors may only make a Charleston trip once in a blue moon, if ever, only because of the distance.

I've been stalking the Tennessee River as a destination for a couple of years and hope that I've peaked enough thought so that a local group organizes a trip. Regardless, I'm going to get there one way or another.

So I say make a plan and maybe you'll have a bunch of folks or maybe you'll have just the locals.. Either way you're sailing and having fun.

There was a thread last year about a midpoint sail based out of Hampton va with some good itineraries in it. I teach so am off all summer and very familiar with the lower bay. There are a lot of options ranging from the deserted Atlantic barrier islands to urban downtown Norfolk/Portsmouth all within 20 miles by water.

If anyone is interested in a spring trip I will probably do the "Carolina Loop" on the ICW April 12-20 between Norfolk Va and Elizabeth city NC. Its about a 100 mile loop and beautiful in the spring. Everything is blooming and its before the bugs and heat. There are free docks or you can anchor in remote areas if you prefer. All the snowbirds are coming north about then with good stories from the winter. There are published itineraries online for the loop and a free video on amazon prime to see what it is like. Its probably our favorite cruise we have done.
