Probably pretty good while getting great mpg. Wonder how much better it could do without the DEF and DPF.

No offence intended...Diesel exhaust fluid and diesel particulate filter. They are on all new diesels and required by law at least here in Canada (surprised the dealer didn't mention it as it's regular maintenance. You'll start noticing jugs of DEL fluid everywhere soon if you haven't already) In order to reduce emissions they've actually reduced the overall efficiency of the engine and cause you to burn more fuel, its a catch 22. The problem is that if you remove the systems which is easily done, you void all warranties and no licensed mechanic can legally work on it. 28mpg on a 3L V6 diesel? Thats too low, should be upwards of 35mpg. Not to mention the increase in HP and ftlbs.

And if I recall correctly, the urea fluid reservoir gets replenished at the same time as an oil change, so it is possible (actually Mercedes deliberately made it that way) that the vehicle owner need not even be aware of it, other than the elevated price at the time of the oil change (S owners don't care and don't want to know), and other scheduled maintenance.
There was a time (recent years) when the diesel technology was under serious threat for use in non-commercial vehicles, it was being phased out in North America. This particular "new" technology changed all that, no more stinky smelly noisy klakety-clack ping-pong diesels any more.
More offerings by the manufacturers mean we'll be seeing more and more diesels on the road now.(And maybe not even know it). Those, and direct-injection engines have bitten into hybrid auto sales.

I thinks as far as diesel cars go VW had it spot on with their turbo diesel Jetta, I remember something along the lines of 45mpg in a 2-2.5L might have been a 1.8, not to mention all the wonderful turbo-d import engines the Aussies keep to themselves for their 4xing
On the maintenance note, we just purchased a new tow beast and decided to go with the maintenance package offered. $2500 and we don't have to pay for an oil change, regular tune ups, wiper blades, brakes nothing for the next 6 years. Do the math real quick and it's worth every penny.

Re: 2014 Ram Laramie 3.0L Diesel 1/4 Mile/0-60?
Thanks yukonbob about the information about the DEF and DPF. I now know that once the warranty runs out on my vehicle I will immediately get even better MPG. Also as a bonus, I will anger the highly socialist people, and government in the state of Maryland at the same time; awesome
.
Now as far as being surprised the dealer didn’t mention it, I am not surprised at all. Researching this vehicle I learned more about each model then any of the salesman at any of the surrounding dealerships in my area. I learned about refilling the 6 gallons of urea every 10,000 on my own, which Ram makes easy to do by putting the filler tube right next to the fuel filler tube. Which is dummy proof in size so my wife cannot accidently fill it with diesel. The urea is plentiful in the states and cheaper at truck stops then the dealerships. Now the only thing left is to figure out how to keep her from filling the fuel tank with gasoline instead of diesel.
I found this information about the Ram Diesel on the web A state-of-the-art selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system also reduces emissions. It incorporates a unique diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system that alerts the driver to low DEF levels, while also allowing the engine to maintain full power. Now I wonder if I just let the fluid run out and the engine will still maintain full power would I get that 35 MPG without having to take anything off? Would it wreck anything?
Somethings have changed since I bought my last new vehicle 10 years ago. Back then I used to just simple look up what vehicle and options I wanted on the web and than get all the dealers within a 100 miles of me to outbid each other to get the best price. Obviously as another sign how corrupt our government has become Ram is blatantly practicing bait and switch. The options that supposedly go together on their web site is not what you can actually order. You have to go to the dealership to find out what Ram allows to go together on their factory computer. You will have to factory order the Diesel because they are this year's biggest phenomenon that you cant find one on the lot.
Here in the states for whatever stupid reason the federal government restricts the “curb weight” which in aviation terms is the “empty weight” of the vehicle. In aviation we restricted aircraft by the gross weight not empty. This is an issue with the diesel weighing 300lbs more than the Hemi. Also only the Bighorn, Lararmie, Lararmie Longhorn, and Laramie Limited models have the all wheel drive option, which has a button that says AUTO next to the rest of the 4WD, 2WD, and 4WD Low buttons which is something you want when driving on a partially slick surface where there is only occasional puddles, ice patches, and light rain.
Here is where the weight comes into play when buying a crew cab long bed model with the diesel and air suspension system. The following information you will not find out on their web site. If you order the Ram cargo management system you can not get a bench seat, or protection group (skid plates & tow hooks), and finaly the tonneau cover. You can load over 1000lbs in the bed but cant order a 10lb option because of curb weight regulations
. I will have to get these items after market when available.

I'd like to see some backyard tuners get their hands on one of these engines and make it more efficient with less emissions and no goverment regulatory compliance, and we all know they can and will

Good luck on that backyard tuner thing. Manufacturers are starting to PIN protect the engine management systems - making it in many cases impossible to re-tune the engine outside of the dealership.
As far as that service plan for $2500 - hope it works out. My Ford dealership will cover oil changes, tire rotation, alignment, car washes for life. They will also warrantee the engine for life if they do the maintenance. All for no extra charge.

Re: 2014 Ram Laramie 3.0L Diesel 1/4 Mile/0-60?
In my younger days I did everything including servicing, modifying, fabricating, overhauling, rebuilding, and parts replacement myself to all my vehicles and anything else that had an engine including a boat which taught me a lot. So much so that I transferred those skills into aircraft maintenance which is why I am where I am now. How ever now that I am where I am I have come to realize my time is money. When I was younger I saved money with my time. Now a days I have to look at how much other peoples time will save me. If I get a $2500 service plan that is good for life I may have to take it depending if that is annually, renewed every X amount of years, or for life.RobertB wrote:Good luck on that backyard tuner thing. Funny, I started out in aircraft maintenance as a support equipment engineer on the F-16 and YF-22 (determined how to do the maintenance and designed the tools). In general, I do most of my own maintenance on the cars, boat, house (everything) including some pretty major stuff. Yeah, as I get older my time is not there anymore but it is real important to pass on these skills to my three sons. Often, when questioned by a school professor about who in the class has actually performed car maintenance, they are the only ones with their hands up. We actually have two additional requirements for the boys on getting their driver's license: first, get the Boy Scouts Auto Maintenance merit badge and second, learn to drive a stick. I tell people if there is one thing to learn to do on your own cars, it is a brake job. Easy to perform in less time than it takes to drop off and pick up the car. Also, save several hundred dollars each time.ROAD Soldier wrote:In my younger days I did everything including servicing, modifying, fabricating, and parts replacement myself to all my vehicles and anything else that had an engine including a boat which taught me a lot. As far as the lifetime warrantee on the truck engine, I bet the dealership will either get out of it on a technicality or end up making the money some other way.

You are blessed with 3 sons like my dad. From what I can tell you are raising them in a logical conservative manner. In this you have reached a pinnacle I can never reach.RobertB wrote:Funny, I started out in aircraft maintenance as a support equipment engineer on the F-16 and YF-22 (determined how to do the maintenance and designed the tools). It won’t take aftermarket companies long to come up with chipped solutions to bypass any electrical lockouts. If the invention of the internet and computers has taught us anything it is that if there is a way, people will ultimately find it.RobertB wrote:Good luck on that backyard tuner thing. Mine is also with Ford and they cover all that as well (less the lifetime warranty) as all the regular scheduled maintenance and everything in-between. The only thing not covered is the tires. They have a 80k tread life warranty but then you gotta buy new tires. I’ll have to look into the lifetime warranty thing…I can’t imagine how that’s going work out for them in the long run.
