Sails from other boats
Has anyone tried using sails from other boats on you Macgregor 26C. One design racing sailboats replace their sails more often then us cruisers and these sails would be relatively cheap and probably in be in decent shape. Looking at the dimensions, I think that maybe J/22 sails may fit our boat. Has anyone tried J/22 sails on their boat? Also does anyone know if the Macgregor 26x's jib fits our boat?

Re: Sails from other boats
I use Hunter 216 mains on my
. They are actually a touch bigger than a
main - which is interesting. They work very well.
A side bonus is that quite a few people think I have a Hunter.

I would look at the lengths and compare. Should be able to if they are not larger.

Very good point. Hunter 216 leech is convex (gives it more sq ft.). The Luff, Leech and Foot are about right.
MACGREGOR 26X MAINSAIL measurements
Luff 24.67ft
Leech-AftHdBd 25.11ft
Foot 10.33ft

Do you know if Macgregor 26x sails fit the Macgregor 26c? It looks like the fore stay may be a little longer on the 26x. Has anyone tried this?

I think you are right. I tried a X spinnaker on a D this summer. It was all I could do to keep it out of the water. Any drop in the breeze and the lower panel got wet.

No, but it makes me want a "Mercedes" or "BMV" main.

I use J-24 headsails on my V-25 (same rig as the 26 classics). It is not doable without some modifications. The forestay has to be lengthened , which means moving it up the mast. This entails lengthening the upper shrouds, as they attach to the mast where the forestay does. To keep the original proportions to the rig, the spreaders were moved up to retain the same ratio. Basically the rig went from a 3/4 fractional to a 15/16 rig. The 155 J24 genoa works out to about a 135 on my V25, which is perfect. I can get slightly used racing sails for around $200 on Ebay, which really offsets the cost of the re-rig. Being able to use those mylar racing sails really makes her sail well, and fast. We have even beat afew J24's in PHRF racing ( even with the 4 second hit for the rig modification).

Very nice! I'd like to do something like this with my 26D.THE CUSCUS wrote:I use J-24 headsails on my V-25 (same rig as the 26 classics). It is not doable without some modifications.
