New USCG flare reg.
Was in the local West marine today, pumping up the economy, and the sales guy (a sailor btw) mentioned that the USGC has changed the flare reg. Used to be, as long as expired flares were kept separate from unexpired ones, no problem. Now they don't want expired flares on the boat in any way, shape, or form.
Guess I'll use them when I'm grilling.

Hmmm....sounds like some pencil pushers idea
I personally want every chance of rescue if needed. I wonder if this Is to push the DSC/VHF radio call program

Could be...my impression is that some pencil pusher didn't want someone with an excess of adrenaline to grab the wrong flares by mistake.

MMM.....Maybe He was just trying to get You to buy flares
My first Wife worked in a small town grocery store, and the manager/owner would set an item on each checkout register and told the girls that if the customer wasn't a regular , to ring up that item also...I guess it's a way to move inventory

Call your local USCG office - and ask for an explanation. Either there is information that is not being communicated or they have an internal issue they need to address. Either way, the issue should be settled.

No...I already had flares in my basket - I buy some new ones every year - hope I don't ever need them, but if I do, I want them to work.

Page 37 USCG Handbook Boating Laws. Pyrotechnic VDS's must be dated. Expired VDS's may be carried on board, but a minimum of Three unexpired VDS's must be carried in the vessel.
So you can have them aboard.

Re: New USCG flare reg.
right. i was replying to the opening post saying you couldn't have expired flares on the boat at all. I could find no official wording to that effect.Capt Sully wrote:Paul S wrote:was on the uscg site, saw no wording to such effect, or on any credible source
