More questions from a new 222 owner!
Let me start off by saying you guys are a great source of knowledge when Google is lacking! So two more questions.
1. How much of the keel should show below the boat on the 222 when fully raised? My keel hangs about 4in below the hull about even from front to back. I have read places that people beach the 222 (I know you can with the 26is) I would think if I beached the boat it would cause stress on the keel pivot bolt.
2. Second question, Would this boat be capable of cruising to Martha s Vineyard from woods hole or another close by launching point? I know I have a lot of sailing experience to gain, but I'm just curious of the future capability of the boat.

Re: More questions from a new 222 owner!
1. That is normal for the keel to be protruding from the bottom of the hull when up, it should be even with the hull line. By beaching I assume you mean leaving on the beach during low tide. I'm an inland sailor so this is foreign to me. If I beached my boat it would not be wet again for 9+ months. I would think it would be fine though, it should not be any more stress than the weight and forces of the keel under normal use.
2. Maybe someone who is familiar with conditions there can better help ya with that one. If you are unfamilar with the condition of your rig and what to look for, you should have someone look at it to be sure everything is in good service.
Enjoy your money pit!

Beach it with care. Don't let it pound. Cautions for any boat.
If the boat is in good shape it's as capable as any other Mac.

A web search comes up with lots of pics of the 22 and 2-22 with the swing centerboard showing a fair bit when retracted.

I'd say it's normal; sort of a skiff keel. Just don't beach it on rocks.

We sail our 26X out of Westport to MV and the Elizabeth Islands 3-4x each summer.Mcadieux wrote:Let me start off by saying you guys are a great source of knowledge when Google is lacking! So two more questions.

Worst crossing I made was in 6-8 footers. Boat was fine, I was not.
That is fairly big water on Buzzards Bay when it kicks up, but these boats are made for it.

Re: More questions from a new 222 owner!
I know the 26x could do it. My fear was the 222 being smaller and not having the powerful motor as back up. This won't be a trip any time soon since were new. But it is something I would like to look forward to doing.Catigale wrote:We sail our 26X out of Westport to MV and the Elizabeth Islands 3-4x each summer.Mcadieux wrote:Let me start off by saying you guys are a great source of knowledge when Google is lacking! 10 hp is probably max rating for that boat and a couple of HP of that would be wasted anyway regardless of the seas.
We have a 15 and wish we didn't.
As mentioned - with proper sail plan your boat can make that trip if you can.

I came through Westport gut, against the tide , with a mere 4 HP kicker last August on a loaded
A 10-15 HP extra long shaft will be my next motor on this boat.
The boaters out of Westport are fantastic people, always helpful.
