26M Centerboard Line Replacement

Post by sandpointsailor »

I have an 11 year old 26M and the centerboard line needs replacement. This model is really more of a straight down daggerboard, not a swing CB on a pivot like some earlier models. The haul up line goes into the top of the centerboard and routes through it somehow and exits at a different point on the top side of the CB. The line has swollen and won't move out of the centerboard. Can anyone suggest a non-brute force method of removing the existing line and rerouting a new line? Also, I may be missing a part on my centerboard assembly. If this line were to fail, then the centerboard would drop into the drink. This appears to be a single point of failure. Should this assembly also have a backup or emergency recovery line? Thanks from Sandpoint Sailor.

I think you can pull your CB up and completely out of the boat on land can't you?

From there, you should be able to get the CB knot out.

( purists call the :macm: a daggerboard and the :macx: a centreboard, but our goal on this Board is to help and not pontificate )

You should have 2 lines going to the top of your dagger board. One is the line that drops and retracts it which should be led to the cockpit and the other is just long enough not to let it drop put of the trunk in case the main line breaks.

Hi,
I just went through this, after my wife drove it aground and I had to cut the rope and drop it out the bottom in shallow water :|

When your mast is off, flip open the latch and pull the entire board out up through the top deck. There are two ropes, one is longer and led back to lift/ lower the board. The other just goes straight up to that latch, through the hole and tied off. This one is what stops the board from going to far down. You have to obviously have this length right, so that 1 foot of board are still in the trunk when all the was down.

If your missing parts hope this helps, if you have all the parts it will be self explanitory.

... so if purists say the above definitions, what are people (like me) called who sometimes refer to the "centerboard" on an :macx: as a "swingkeel" ? :?

You can call them swing keels, centerboards, daggerboards or drop keels, personally I prefer to use the term that best describes their function and that would be, Long thin thing that hangs under the boat to test if the bottom is rock or mud :D
