kmclemore wrote:And as I look at that galley, where the heck is MacGregor getting his supplies lately? That sink/counter unit looks like a 'bath vanity top' right from "Home Depot"... and it ain't their best brand either. Sheesh.
After my feelings stop being hurt, I will move on.....as that is like my 2004M counter top. :(

Just don't put something too heavy on the countertop, or it will cave in. I had to install a under-counter brace to help stiffin it up enough for my microwave and TV.

A very talented fellow who for now is SHORT on cash and Long on Free Time and Ability. I have done a lot of work on Corvettes and that boat
?LOOKS? to be repairable and for NOT nearly as much as some here seem to think. imho. Ya need a trailer and a couple grand worth of materials you could do a reverse form ( so you dont need a donor ) though you dont need that kind of form to repair that boat anyway.

Gees, Rich. I thought the counter top looked swell.

This is a 'hanger queen'. The boat was damaged on the road. Check the mast. Did that happen at sea? I doubt, but maybe,

A hanger queen is a B-17 that made it home so shot up it would never fly again.. Invaluable pieces of junk aboard, however. They were pilfered by the ground crews making others that were able to get into the air 'whole' again.

This boat cannot be made to sail again

If you're young and patient, and have a junkyard mentality, you can make a decent living scoffing this stuff up for a nickel on the buck.

Its done all the time in the islands and here as well. Most here I guess would be surprised to see what you can buy for repairs. We just bought some very special glass board at $80 a sq ft. and they made the fireproof explosion proof pieces to our custom sizes and dimensions and design needs .

Well, then what can I say... buy it and have-at-it, guys. Let us know how you make out.

I've had many years of professional fiberglass engineering experience - in design, mold-making and actual construction - and I wouldn't touch that job with a barge pole. Remember, it's not enough to just patch it... it has to be structurally sound, such that bashing along through the waves won't induce an endless series of stress cracks radiating from repaired areas, and such that it won't be so solid that it will impart additional stress on nearby areas because the repair lacks the proper flexibility. That ain't as easy as it looks. Yes, indeed it could be done, as I noted earlier, but IMHO the hours you'd put in to do it right would be ungodly. Indeed, the insurance folks probably thought the same thing - that's why they wrote it off instead of having it fixed.

Hmmm... don't know, SJB, I think it was almost definitely in the water when it was hit, and the mast itself is the clue.

IMHO, the mast damage seems consistent with the mast being in a raised position. Consider this... when the Mac was hit the inertia of the mast made it want to stay in one place... so the boat was forced to port, and the mast top stayed put, beginning the bend, and it then collapsed immediately after the hit, folding down, bending neatly at the base. Just like when you hit the cue-ball at the base or when you tackle a quarterback with a low-level hit - you get backspin - and just like the cue or the quarterback, that mast got clipped at the knees and fell back against direction of the hit.

Have a look at the picture below... notice that the mast is bent from port to starboard (consistent with the boat being hit from the starboard side), and also note that there isn't any damage to the bow rail in line with where the mast is damaged, nor is there damage to the mast in line with where the bow rail was bent. Finally, there doesn't appear to be any scratches on the mast to give evidence of any sort of 'impact' type of hit... instead we're left with just a really fugly bend where she fell over. Ouch.

Seems a willie nelson country western song is in order here....
something like...

...Mama's dont let your cowboys grow up to race sailboats......

Don't try that at home.....

P.S. I have the first 3 or 4 verses of that one figured out......

My favorite Willie Nelson song is:
On the boat again,
I just can't wait to get on the boat again . . .
