How do I make a msp

Post by Kelly »

Just bought a 26x and being alone 90% of the time I have problems raising the mast without a pole. Any one knows how to build one and what are the dimensions

Since you mostly single-hand you will probably need a "msp" with a winch... Do a search of this site, lots of info.. Sorry I can't help more, my mast is always up.. :?

RGF,
The advertisements state that if your mast is up for more than four hours, see your doctor :)

Kelly,

Does BWY sell them :?:

I bought one from BlueWater a couple of years ago - I find it essential being single - handed; still shown on their site - 'call for price'

I bought an MRS system from BWY and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of it - the winch is IMO undersized (its a 350lb winch), and the mechanism is prone to "slipping" one notch right at the 45-degree point of the mast, which will scare the living you-know-what out of anyone that doesn't expect it to happen.

I have just purchased a 2000 lb "worm drive" winch which doesn't rely on a ratcheting mechanism for the bidirectional winching, and I'm going to replace it.

Essentially, the MRS is:

1)A pole of certain length and diameter (I can measure and update tonight). This pole attaches to the forward holes on the tabernacle.
2)the winch is installed about 1/3 of the way down the pole, faces aft, and works a line that runs up to the top of the pole, through a shackle facing aft, and to an attachment point right where the baby stays attach to the mast.
3)There is another line attached to the top of the pole, facing forward, that you tie down to the bow cleats. The idea is to set the pole around 15 degrees away from vertical (towards the bow)

That's all there is to it. If I was 100% happy with the stock winch I would say just go ahead and buy it from BWY, but at this point I would be hesitant to recommend without also suggesting you replace the winch with something stronger. BWY is probably happy to sell you everything except the winch for a reasonable price too.

Dutton-Lainson makes the 350 lb winch MacGregor used. For another $10, you can get the 800 lb winch. I don't know if it's suitable, as too light of a load and the brake won't hold (it's self-energizing), but I would imagine it will work fine.

FYI, I have the BWY MRS system and I find myself still using the original Mac X MRS system. It might simply be familiarity. 8)

You can also source the 6 ft (1-1/2" x 1/8" wall aluminium) tube locally, buy the flared 'feet' from BWY (or make your own, of any of a number of styles), and use the main sheet and blocks, which is the OEM 26X style. I replaced my blocks with bullet blocks that I had laying around, with much larger sheaves with actual ball bearings (5-parts of line, too 8) ), and I can pull the mast up from the roller with the line through my main sheet rope clutch with just one hand. And I'm not as strong as I used to be. As nice as the M-style MRS is, I'll stay with what I have, as there are other places to spend my hard-earned scratch. :D

Yes, the braking requires a certain amount of tension on the line. this is probably more appropriate for a vertical lift - for mast raising the tension increases and decreases throughout the pull.

That's another reason why I like the worm drive winch - its a simple, perfect, passive solution.

I'm also considering replacing the line with a strap - is there such a thing as a shackle to pass a 2" strap?

You could always source the 1-1/2" OD x 1/8" wall x 6 ft long aluminium tube elsewhere (or use steel), and use the main sheet blocks and line, which is essentially what the OEM 26X system was. You can get the 'feet' to interface the tabernacle from BWY, or make your own.

I replaced my fiddle blocks with bullet blocks I had laying around, which have larger sheaves with ball bearings 8) , and I can pull the mast up off its roller with just one hand. The line passes through the main halyard rope clutch on the cabin roof, so I can stop anywhere. And it won't fall if I have a heart attach while raising the mast, though dropping the mast is probably the least of my worries in that case.

Pole: 6 ft long, 1.5 in od; 0.1375 wall
Center of top eyes; 2 inches from top
Center of winch; 40.25 from top
Pretty much what Tom gave you above. And as he says any strong tubing about 6 ft long would do. Brake winch is the trick - and as others have said, maybe different ways of doing that, too.

See pics for details - ask if you need more info.

Check with Ray [Nice Aft] (his boat's name - not describing Ray's aft - although he is rather attractive...) regarding the bottom brackets. You might want to beef the bottom brackets up a bit.
