Can anyone explain how it is that the black strip just under the gunwale maintains a good finish, as does the hull generally compared to everything above the gunwale?

Pretty sure it's all about solar exposure. Strip on the side is mostly vertical, and somewhat shaded by the rub rail. Black surfaces around the windows is angled upward, at a nearly optimal angle to the sun a good amount of time.
