Moving the head

My wife and I will be shopping for a newer Mac in the next few months; we currently have an 88 D. We prefer the layout of the X with the head by the hatch, and the open V berth, but also like the idea of having a much newer boat such as an M from 2006 or newer. We don't like the galley on the 04/05 as it is the same as our D.

My question; has anyone considered relocating the head on an M from the front to the rear? I believe it could be done on the starboard side due to the moveable galley.

To be fair we have only been on our D and an X, we have yet to experience an M, but intend to do so before making our purchase.

I am not sure why you would want to move the heads. With the galley slid abaft, this area is prime social real estate.

That seems like a LOT of work. Cutting into lots of fiberglass.

SOOO much easier to just buy a nice X.

Your observation is valid. The M head is tiny. We took the door off the head as it's useless for people larger than a 6 year old child. With the door off, we have 2 curtains and it works very well.
This is a small boat. Don't expect luxury in the head.

Thanks all. The X is for sure the easiest way to go. The only reason in considering the M is to get a newer boat, and there are a few good deals out there for some 2008s to 2011s. Owning an 88 however, has shown us that regardless of what others say, these boats are built to last!

In our D we have removed the walls from the head, replacing them with curtains, we could do this in the M also, but momma really likes having the head close to ladder, the boat is much more open this way, but we want to be able to stand up! We're gettin old er!

The head doesn't really have a space advantage over the , just location. Unless a short person, it's too small to fully stand up in, barely room to sit in, much less move about. I use it standing on the cabin floor, leaning in or sitting sideways feet out.

The location however does make for a great wet locker / fender storage, easy access to the cockpit.

Thanks, I was under the impression it was considerably larger based on having a sink! If I'm sitting in the sink that's not an advantage. Guess I need to climb back in one again!

I have the M boat and the head is huge!



I put in a sliding door so the entire forward section becomes the head ! -
lot's of room to streach your legs and wipe your nose or whatever else you wanna do in there.
(Most important - you have your own vent/escape hatch up there too!)


And what's real nice is that when your not making poo the door slides out of the way so the interior is not encumbered in any way:

I have an 05 . and the galley is the same as all of the models since then.

The 04 is different. I bought mine in Oct. 04, and an 05 was delivered. Hull #ACH00082G405. Don't eliminate an 05 if cost is a definitive point.

I've always admired your fabrication/mod skills. Your mods always look like they were original factory designs.

This door is interesting. We have a curtain there. It works well and is cheap AND meets my fabrication skill level.

the interior of the looks great on photos.

BUT: I just can use it practically since I put away ALL the cushions of the port bunks.

And now it does not look so wunderful anymore but the boat is not completely full of cusions if you have to move the gallay...

When I was having a momentary lapse of reason a few years back and thinking about selling the boat, I had someone around to look at it and the female half of the couple seemed unimpressed that I had removed the door to the head. I tried to explain that with the door on it was like trying to take a crap while encased in a sardine can but that seemed to make her less impressed.

I am amazed that some people leave the door on! It is so much better with it off, although still a pain in the ass.

I was going to put a curtain on when I took it off, but never actually got around to it. For number ones, we dont care, for number 2s, I generally call a clear lower deck and get people not involved in the maneuver to muster in the cockpit.

We pretty much avoid number twos in the boat if possible anyway, if at anchor I am more likely to go ashore...
