Re: Sailing Lake Powell (Arizona & Utah)
That is the other reason why I would rather go with others to Powell - the place is mostly for ski boats and jet skis and house boats full of drunk people who like to party a lot. I water ski - and when I go to Havasu I don't mind the jet boats and the bikinis and the beer and the foul language as long as I can get a tow. But, it is NOT a place I want to take my sailboat and my wife. At Havasu I stand on the beach in knee deep water with my ski and hold my thumb out until someone throws me a rope. If the rope has handles I know I get a tow ride, if it doesn't then I will help them tie up their boat and I do both with a smile.
I also avoid Mission Bay or Marine Stadium in Long Beach or any other place heavily crowded with jet boats pulling water skiers when i am on the sailboat. I have a lot of time on ski boats and even more time on a ski behind them but in my opinion the two cultures do not mix. I prefer to enjoy one OR the other - not try to mix both at the same time - they are no what I call 'complementary' cultures.
One of the best things about all the ocean sailing I do is watching all the jet skis get left behind in the swells and chop as i glide along out to sea. I wave 'by by' to them as I sail out into the deep water where is nice and quiet and peaceful and I don't need to pretend 'what a man I am' in front of all the youngsters trying to kill themselves on their power-craft. It's fun and I like to do that stuff too, but when I'm ready to sail, I want to SAIL.
I see Powell as more of a place to explore caves and canyons and pull the boats up narrow gourges in hip deep water (ie: the African queen) and greet an get together and wear hardly no clothing and swim and play in the water and stare down the idiots on jet skis who won't dare mess with us because we are too many and sing songs at the campfire kind of place. Not really a place to do a lot of sailing.

Right, I said "hardly" no clothing, but not NO clothing. Compared to the way we bundle up against the weather out in the ocean I assume a pair of shorts and a hat is "hardly no clothing".Baha wrote:Boat,

I'm sure over there in the UK you have seen your share of Eastern Europeans and their speedo trunks. Nothing like a fat Russian in bikini shorts to spoil your day, but you gotta give it to them they do like to enjoy life when they get the chance so I can't fault them. I just got back from the Middle East 2 weeks ago and you should have seen those guys at the Dead Sea! (I did NOT take any pictures!).
Anyways, that's not really gonna happen at Lake Powell, not a lot of folks from the Ukraine over there, although they would be be better company than the drunk naked jet ski crowd.

Yup.....most Speedos are stretchy because they HAVE to be....
Too cold for that on the Norfolk coast though....you see that in Spain.

Oh my, your way over there on the east side south, your closer to the rest of my family in Denmark. (my last name is Hansen), so you folks go to sea just like my reletives in Denmark - dressed to the hilt - so you know what I'm talking about. Over here in California when a skipper dresses down to go sailing he wears a Polo shirt.
I enjoyed the Mediterranean, and even did catch a boat on the Galilee, but you guys bumping around on the North Sea are way too hard core for me - that's where 'Real Men' sail - I don't think I would be good enough to ply the North Sea. My relatives in Horsens tell me it pretty hard core.

Re: Sailing Lake Powell (Arizona & Utah)
No, no Zohan on the Galilee but I did manage to hitch a ride with this guy:

The only bad part about the Middle East is the backbreaking flights to Istanbul - daily flight 9 and 10 on Turkish airlines (that's a commuter flight for those Dyncorp and Triple Canopy and Blackwater guys and oil company workers! 13 hours!) flight 10 to get there and flight 9 to get back - I think they pass each other every day somewhere over Greenland.

What really sucked this time is that there were hundreds of protesters there at LAX screaming and yelling and chanting and news cameras following my wife around at check in line at Turkish Airlines because they thought my wife was some Palestinian getting banned out of the country, (she is MEXICAN! - fer crying out loud those idiots at CNN can't tell the difference between a Jordanian and a Mexican!!). Anyways, that made the flight a little more challenging.
I finally got offloaded on a "real" boat once I got out in the water:

The Galilee is a bit too small for me to do any sailing - same as Lake Powell, would be better with friends and a campfire.
the Mediterranean looked like a better deal for the sailboat.

It's not too bad if you get used to the currents, the tides, and the commercialBOAT wrote:Oh my, your way over there on the east side south, your closer to the rest of my family in Denmark. Traffic. It's actually a lot of fun. Who doesn't enjoy a good challenge.
Come over and we'll give it a bash!

Okay, I can stay at Tudenham in my camper van and eat at Trisha's Chippy and then at night we can get together at the California Tavern since I am from California:Baha wrote:It's not too bad if you get used to the currents, the tides, and the commercialBOAT wrote:Oh my, your way over there on the east side south, your closer to the rest of my family in Denmark. I think 'boat' and I would feel right at home at that trailer park with all the other caravans. Is that close enought to the North Sea? I have no idea where you guys put in over there - I always thought everything between Cambridge and the east coast was farm land. i would need a guide.

The VYC of San Diego is planning a Powell trip this year, 2017 during late August/Sept. If you haven't been there and done that before, get with them and enjoy some good sailors doing the trip.

Somewhat true, but still several Macs. Look at their homepage showing boats on Powell beach.

Re: Sailing Lake Powell (Arizona & Utah)
I will rephrase that - I don't think any of the VYC people in San Diego are sailing MACs. I think they have all succumbed to the pressures of the boating community down there - San Diego sailboat community hates the MAC and they all seem to have a hostile opinion about all things MacGregor. If you sail in the big bay people will ridicule you - which sort of cracks me up because most of the sailors down there in their big sailboats are too chicken to leave the bay and go sail out in the ocean. I have a lot more respect for the sailors in Oceanside because EVERYONE here sails in the ocean - there is no where else to sail - we don't have a 'big bay'.
I'm not much of a bay sailor anyways so I am not exposed to it but our friend mastreb who used to be on this site dumped his MAC after sailing the bay for 4 years (like every other MAC owner in the bay that I know of).
I will never forget one of my SD bay friends literally going hostile on me when I told him I was considering buying a MAC. His reaction was like I was a democrat voting for Trump or a Jew converting to Islam - his reaction shocked me. I found out it was a common attitude down there. I guess the folks at VYC have mostly all succumbed to the hostility of the community there.
I dunno, just my opinion, but go count how many times I have been wrong.

Re: Sailing Lake Powell (Arizona & Utah)
I am about a 2 hr drive to the River Orwell. Lots of great marinas all down that river, with the added plus of dodging freighters coming up the channel to Ipswitch. If that's not enought..there is always the container port at Felixstowe. Nice coastal sailing beyond that! I'll send some pics if I can and put them on my profile.BOAT wrote:Okay, I can stay at Tudenham in my camper van and eat at Trisha's Chippy and then at night we can get together at the California Tavern since I am from California:Baha wrote:It's not too bad if you get used to the currents, the tides, and the commercialBOAT wrote:Oh my, your way over there on the east side south, your closer to the rest of my family in Denmark. Re: Sailing Lake Powell (Arizona & Utah)
Huh, you put in at Suffolk or Shotley? (Is there a ramp at Shotley?) So your only about 50 miles from London? Wow, I'm way too far north. Must be exiting to sail a boat in London. You can sail 20 miles south to get to that river that goes to London, right? That must be exiting - I wish I could do that.
Hey guys, you and I need to pay a zillion bucks to Danish people to go on one of those cool viking river cruises up that river and Baha gets to do it fro free! What a life.
