Seakeeper 1 for boats 23 - 30 feet

Post by rsvpasap »

A bit more expensive than Magma Rock N Roll stabilizers, https://magmaproducts.com/boat-stabilizer

but interesting ...

And only $14,900... yikes. Looks really cool though. I've never been on a boat equipped with one. Anyone ever been around one and can give avfirst hand review?

This outfit had a booth at the Seattle Boat Show, and it looks pretty cool. It's really nothing more than a big gyroscope, with a fast spinning disc sized for the boat, which tends to stabilize the boat. They had a small water tank set up, with a scale model boat about 18 inches long, with a miniature unit inside the boat. You could easily tip the boat up and down with your finger tips, but when the guy turned the stabilizer unit on, the model was significantly harder to tip. They also had videos running, showing full sized boats. All this said, besides the cost, they would be utterly impractical for a Mac, taking up valuable space our boats don't have, and also requiring a significant power demand.

It seems like you would need VERY strong members to mount it on. Who figures out how to beef the boat up so it can take pounding through chop with the Jimmy Neutron Gyro Stabilizer running? I'm thinking the engineering and installation charges could get pretty steep if done right. Note that the $14,900 did NOT include installation... :|

Went on a friends 50 ft Sabre which had one or something like it. Takes 45 minutes to spin up and 4 hrs to spin down. When it is on the boat in 2 ft waves just sits there. Tide, wind, waves when he hits the buttons, boat sits like on a pond and doesn't move more than 1 ft in any direction. Nice when you want to stop and chat with a friend who is anchored and do not want to anchor or raft up. That is more than just the sea keeper, its also a bunch of other stuff working together. If you have about $1,500,000, for the Sabre, the sea keeper is only a small cost. :)

I too keep having to remind myself that if you have a $1.5 mill boat the cost of a peripheral system at $15-20k is not a big deal. Not a world I live in but am happy for those that can because it probably makes the sleep a lot better. What I really find interesting is the engineering behind some of these boat upgrades. Really fantastic stuff.
