26M Quick Disconnect Motor connector

Post by adudinsk »

After trying to install the quick disconnect connector kit fro BWY, I ran into problems where the rod was too long, and would not fit where the original bracket was bolted.

After seeing Highlander's fix , this is what I did.
1) Make a bracket of ALUMINUM (thick) 3.5" long with holes 2" apart (1" off each side of center)
2) retapped the holes in the engine mount (where the tiller would go) as they were all full of crud (5/64" -24 thread)
3) Cut down each end of the quick disconnect by about 1/2"
4) After test fitting the bracket and I decided to crop one corner off so it will not interfere with the quick connect
5) As well that ball was raised up a bit for clearance using 4 washers.
6) It was then brought home, the corner clipped, and fully degreased
7) I then use Metal Ready by POR15 to zinc plate the metal
8) And lastly I used some killer Por15epoxy Rust Proof paint so the ALuminum would NEVER touch other metals. (its SUPER hard to get through the paint epoxy when done.

Worked Great
Thanks Highlander for your tips!

Maybe I'm not seeing this correctly, but it doesn't look like your angle bracket is deep enough to allow the steering to work. Have you turned the wheel lock to lock to see if your motor steers correctly?

Looking good otherwise.

The rudders lock up before the motor does.

Will check again..

Oh.. its hard to see.. but I Raised up the quick connector with washer, or it would hit the back of the bracket.

the original steering bar (tube) was to short. The ball would hit the port side motor wellwall when turning to starboard before the rudders were full over. Turning to port was no issue as the steering bar (tube) could fully extend from the port side of the motor stern well. I ordered a new longer steering tube so I could custom cut and locate the ball. The longer steering tube allowed me to move the ball approx. 1 1/2 in. to starboard and now I can turn the rudders lock to lock. I shortened the quick disconnect bar approx. 1/2" on both ends and still had enough thread to make the needed fine adjustment to align the motor with the rudders. I relocated the the disconnect ball so the motor locks dead ahead when disconnected. The shortened disconnect bar limits the raising my Etec 50 full up by 1/2" as the new longer tube and ball will not quite clear the motor housing. All thing considered I now have full rudder control under sail or motor. Who know maybe I will finally get the boat in the water yet this year.

my motor is big... so when raised it has a tiny tiny bit still in the water as it interferes with the captains seat.I guess I can raise the seat and lift the motor more for optimal speed.. not concerned though.. If I want to go fast I motor.
