I love my 26M

Post by HuzurPapa »

Peeps can make fun of these incredible trailer sailers all they want. I love mine! One day a houseboat got stuck in the mud in the shallow bay behind my marina. I was just cleaning my boat and watched them try to extricate themselves for a few minutes. When I saw they were hopelessly stuck I shouted to see if they needed some help. They, seeing I was aboard a sailboat, said yes and wanted me to call someone to come pull them out. I said, that’s ok, I will be there in a moment. I slipped the lines and putted over to them. As they saw me approach they said be careful, it is very shallow. Then they said they were stuck hard and the engine was not working and would need some serious pull to get free. Silly doubters! I told them my draft was only 1 foot, less than theirs, and then I turned the boat around to prepare to tow them and they saw the 50hp Yamaha on the stern. They laughed as we got lines attached. I pulled them out easily and took them about 1/2 mile to their sister houseboat. As we approached I got some speed and veered away at the last minute as I released their tow line. They coasted gently up to their friends. I love my boat! It has all kinds of uses.

It's always fun to surprise people with the capabilities of the Mac. Do our boats really only draw 12" of water? I've never tested this.

Figure about 9" with motor and all boards raised; a little less with no ballast. Probably closer to 19" with the motor down all the way.

On our trip to the Exumas we stopped at the Highbourne Cay Marina for gas, ice and ice cream. Didn't want to pay their transient dockage rates, which were very pricey, so at mid tide I nosed across the shallow (about 2 feet) sand bar and into a little pond just outside of the marina. The water deepened just a little, all of 3 feet, so I hopped off the boat, walked up to the bow, released the anchor, and walked about 50 feet ahead of where the boat was floating, laid the anchor down in the sand, and set it with the heel of my sandal. It's an excellent technique in such waters, and I highly recommend it. Love that shallow draft.

Once when coming back from the Atlantic Ocean off Longport, NJ, I was on the Sod Thorofare heading back to the public dock at Linwood City. A fellow on a jet ski raced past me and started flailing his arms, telling me to stop, it’s too shallow. I told him it’s fine, but thank you. He got into the water to show me that the water is just over his knees. I told him all’s well, and kept going.

I've had the same experience around Cedar Key and the mouth of the Suwannee River. I just smile and wave 8)
