I'm a new owner of a and it was purchased stripped down of all the fittings. The previous Owner gave me all the parts including this curious J shaped pipe and it's the only part I have no idea about. Its made of 1" tubular stainless steel. It almost looks like it could be a ladder attachment except for the absence of holes to attach the rungs...ad I only have one of them. My second though was it's part of the steering...or maybe a handhold for the companionway ladder???
I have no idea what that could be. The end with 4 holes looks like it has been inside something else. The 4 holes may have been to allow it to rotate 90 degrees before having a pin or bolt inserted to keep it in place. Do you have a flange or other type of fitting with at least 2 holes it it that this thing could fit into? I'm not sure what to make of the fact that one end has been welded shut and the other is open. It probably does not mount in such a way that the open end would collect water.
It's a long shot but by any chance did the previous owner use a walker? It reminds me of something you might see on a walker or a "potty chair".

That's the stock factory diving snorkel, used with a mask, for topping up your blinker fluid - the tank for which is located in an extremely poorly thought-out location on early 's.
's, of course, have always used solid-state blinkers.

The PO was a young guy so dont think its part of a walker. The piece is stainless steel and not a chromed alloy so I figured it would be for marine use. It's possible the part isn't even off the MacGregor and was just thrown in with all the other spares because it looked like it belonged.

And here is the stock linkage (mine has the quick disconnect kit mounted).
Roughly 15" from the outboard connection to the rudder arm connection hole.
And about a 5" offset...
Looks to match up pretty good with the relative hole positions your piece has.
What year is that boat?
Hi JimmyT,
Thanks. I initially though steering linkage too but the piece is shaped like an umbrella handle, whereas all the steering linkages I have seen curve to right angle.

Perfect! When I find the blinker fluid reservoir and some blinker fluid, I'll be all set!

It is the earlier version...
