Hello,
Purchased a Raymarine ST 1000 and now that the snow is clear, I am ready to install it.
The instructions say to have the tiller pin 18 inches from the tiller pivot point and then to go 23,2 inches to the starboard side to drill the mounting pin for the pilot.
This would put the Autohelm mounting point at the edge of the laz. I would prefer to mount it on the gunnel, Has anyone tried that on a 26D?

You can see that 23.2 is at the edge of the laz. I don’t want to mount it here for two reasons.
1) I often sit on the laz and don’t want to sit on the mount that I would have to add to make the unit level.
2) I don’t like the idea of all the forces of controlling the tiller to be transferred to the hinges of the laz. Seems like that would be a point of failure at some point.

Extend the pushrod, make a tiller bracket with an offset, or make a gunnel bracket offset to get a better mounting spot. Agree with you, that mounting to a hinged item is not ideal. Pushrod extensions should be available from the manufacturer (or you can fab one).
