26X stock trailer axel

Post by billybax »

I need to replace the axel on my Macgregor 26X original trailer. What are the specs of that axel?
Does anyone have a good online source for buying one?
The rest of the trailer is in pretty good shape and I just replaced the surge brake system. I'll probably look for a dual axel aluminum trailer in the future but would like to just do the axel for now.

Thanks.

I could not find an exact replacement for the stock 1 1/2” (?) drop axle, so I measured hub face to hub face and got closest straight axle ( guessing so measure yourself 87-88”?) I could find. It raised the trailer slightly but I didn’t notice it. I bought my axle from Redneck Trailer Supply. I installed dual 5 lug 3500 LB axles, some others went to a heavier duty 6 lug or 8 lug axle, as stock axle is too close to weight of boat and trailer, especially when you add anything else.

Thanks. Yes my axel looks to have about a 2" drop. I'll do the measurements and see what I can find.

I like the mod you did with the sliding rails.

That leaf spring mounting bracket is Available online somewhere (forgot where) and it’s galvanized, and has brackets for fenders also. But it’s for 2 axles. Corrosion between the rails would be an issue to address. I changed the leaf springs and all the hardware at the same time, axles I bought had springs mounted already but where in wrong location, I bought the spring perches (on the axle) and welded them in a few inches. An issue I had was figuring the spring length, as the old ones where flattened, I never figured it out , but I was welding new upper spring brackets anyways.

I replaced the 3500# axle on my stock trailer last year with a galvanized 5200# axle. In my opinion the 3500# stock axle is marginal at best if you plan to stay with single axle. I went ahead and installed six lug wheels with disc brakes and heavier duty springs so the cost gets on up there. I wouldn't have done it if my trailer had been severely rusted. I purchased the axle from Trailerparts.com. I would purchase from them again. Here's the link: https://trailerparts.com/2-x-3-galvanze ... 8-006.html

If you're interested, I can provide the sources of parts that I used.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen any 2" drop axels. I like the idea of a 5200lb axel but I just bought new wheels, tires, brakes and bearings last year. So I'll stick to 3500 lbs and maybe add a second one later.
