Engine Knock Evinrude 3-cyl 50 1998

Post by EZ »

Had a great day out on the SF Bay yesterday. Was tired when I came back in, so I decided to leave the engine in the water until this morning for flushing.

Before installing the flushing attachment, I started the engine in the water to let it get up to operating temp. When I tried to rev it (up to about 1500 RPM), it kicked and sputtered for a while(RPM's fluctuated) and then died. This would settle down for a while when I brought the throttle down to idle. After about 10 minutes, the engine would die in idle.

Other conditions observed:
-My engine is a 2-stroke and the "no oil" lite came on when the oil tank was more than 1/4 full.
-Could just be my perception, but based on the oil tank level the engine seemed like it burned more oil than normal.

My gameplan for now is to inspect all wiring connections into the engine(oil tank sender in particular). Anyone out there ever experience this kind of issue? Your insights would be appreciated.

Fuel Starved

Post by Timm Miller »

It sounds like for whatever reason it was fuel starved. Might want to check filters, gas lines, or any other obstruction. Was the vent open? Air in the line can make it act like this under load...but would idle fine. Might want to run some power cleaner or fuel cleaner through it first if something obvious doesn't stand out.
